ACS Dharna in Itanagar Demands CM Resignation for Fair Probe

Itanagar, May 3:

The Arunachal Civil Society (ACS), led by Byabang Joram and Narang Chatung, has announced a three-day sit-in dharna from May 4 to 6 at Tennis Court, Itanagar. The protest aims to press for the resignation of the Chief Minister, with ACS asserting that a fair and impartial investigation cannot take place while he remains in office.

Raising questions over the state government’s intentions, Joram expressed concern about a high-level meeting scheduled for May 5 at the Civil Secretariat. The meeting is expected to bring together top engineering and nodal officials, which ACS believes may influence the course of the ongoing developments.

Drawing comparisons with precedents in other states, Joram stated that leaders facing investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have typically stepped down to ensure transparency.

He emphasized that resignation on moral grounds would allow for an unbiased probe, adding that the Chief Minister could reassume office if cleared of all charges.

Highlighting concerns over administrative pressure, Joram argued that senior officials may hesitate to provide honest statements if the Chief Minister continues in office. “No employee would speak freely against their superior in such a situation,” he said, stressing that the CBI probe must be conducted without any perceived influence.

ACS further warned that if the Chief Minister does not resign after the three-day dharna, the organization will intensify its democratic movement in the coming days.

Mizoram Declared Insurgency-Free After Final Surrender

Aizawl, May 1:

In a landmark moment for Northeast India, Mizoram has been officially declared insurgency-free, marking the end of decades-long armed insurgency in the state.

The declaration follows the surrender of the last remaining militant faction associated with the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic). A total of around 43 cadres, including senior leaders, laid down their arms during a formal ceremony near Aizawl, signalling their return to mainstream society.

During the ceremony, the cadres surrendered weapons and pledged to abandon violence, in the presence of senior government officials and security forces. The event symbolised reconciliation, stability, and a decisive shift toward lasting peace in the region.

Officials described the development as a major breakthrough, stating that Mizoram is now free from active underground insurgent groups.

Authorities clarified that while routine law-and-order challenges may still exist, organised armed insurgency has effectively come to an end.

The achievement is expected to have far-reaching impacts. With improved security conditions, the state is likely to witness accelerated infrastructure development, increased investment, tourism growth, and better livelihood opportunities for its people.

Mizoram, once affected by insurgency movements, is now being seen as a model for successful peace-building and conflict resolution in Northeast India.

CUET 2026 Arunachal Students Face Centre Issues

Itanagar, May 3:

Parents and students across Arunachal Pradesh have voiced strong resentment over the CUET 2026 examination centre allocations, with many candidates being assigned centres far outside the state. The issue has reignited long-standing concerns over accessibility and fairness in conducting national-level entrance exams in geographically remote regions.

The National Testing Agency introduced the Common University Entrance Test in 2022 under the National Education Policy 2020, making it a mandatory gateway for undergraduate admissions to central universities. However, since its implementation, students from Arunachal Pradesh have consistently faced difficulties due to limited examination infrastructure within the state.

Many candidates have been compelled to travel to neighbouring Assam to appear for the examination. This year, the situation has escalated further after complaints surfaced that some students have been allotted centres as far as Manipur. Affected families have raised serious concerns regarding the financial burden, safety risks, and logistical challenges associated with long-distance travel, especially for students from remote and hilly areas.

At present, CUET is conducted at only four centres within the state—NIT Jote, NERIST Nirjuli, RGU Doimukh, and iON Digital Zone Naharlagun—located in and around the capital region. While these centres play a crucial role, they remain insufficient to accommodate the widespread student population across Arunachal Pradesh’s vast terrain.

Recognizing the issue, Education Minister PD Sona had, in 2025, formally requested the Ministry of Education to establish at least four additional CUET centres in Pasighat (East Siang), Bomdila (West Kameng), Tezu (Lohit), and Aalo (West Siang). However, despite this appeal, there appears to have been no significant progress or policy action taken so far, as the shortage of examination centres in Arunachal Pradesh continues to persist. Students and stakeholders argue that the lack of follow-up implementation has left the situation unchanged, forcing candidates to once again depend on distant centres this year.

Students and guardians have now appealed for immediate intervention from Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Meje Taku. The matter has also gained traction with the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union, which has demanded urgent corrective measures and a review of the centre allocation system.

Students have urged the NTA to reassess its allocation process to ensure fair and accessible examination centres within Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizing that equal opportunity in national-level examinations must account for regional and infrastructural challenges.

Itanagar Police Bust Inter-State Drug Network, Arrest Supplier in Assam

seized heroin during Operation All Out crackdown.

Itanagar, May 2:

Under its ongoing “Operation All Out,” Itanagar Police has intensified an intelligence-driven crackdown on drug peddling, targeting sourcing, transportation, and local distribution of narcotic substances across the Capital Region.

Over the past one and a half months, police have registered six heroin-related cases under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of six accused peddlers and carriers. During these operations, approximately 120 grams of suspected heroin were seized from multiple locations within Itanagar.

Investigations into the cases revealed a recurring pattern indicating that the narcotic substances were being sourced from Assam and transported into Itanagar through inter-state trafficking channels. Through sustained interrogation, technical surveillance, and linkage analysis, police identified a key suspected supplier as Ruful Amin (31), son of Sukur Ali, a resident of Kekokali Nepali in Sonitpur district, Assam.

Acting on this intelligence, Itanagar Police coordinated with Jamuguri Police Station in Sonitpur district to conduct a joint operation. The operation led to the arrest of Ruful Amin from Jamuguri.

During the raid, an intermediate quantity of suspected heroin was recovered from his possession, following which a separate case was registered at Jamuguri Police Station.

Officials confirmed that the case registered in Jamuguri is a direct outcome of intelligence developed by Itanagar Police and highlights effective inter-state coordination. The operation underscores the department’s strategic focus on dismantling drug supply chains at their source, extending beyond local jurisdictions and even outside Arunachal Pradesh.

Itanagar Police reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics through intelligence-based policing, coordinated enforcement, and sustained lawful action aimed at disrupting organized drug networks.

Interstate Boundary Survey Begins Along Arunachal–Assam Border

East Siang, May 1:

The Border Affairs Department has commenced joint interstate boundary surveys along the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border, starting Thursday in Lower Siang and East Siang districts. The exercise is being conducted in coordination with the Government of Assam and the Survey of India.

According to the department, the survey will also begin in Lower Dibang Valley from May 1. The initiative is being carried out in a phased, stretch-wise manner, with districts in Arunachal Pradesh paired with corresponding districts in Assam, including Dhemaji and Tinsukia.

The survey aims to achieve an amicable and scientific demarcation of the interstate boundary using geospatial coordinates and on-ground verification.

In East Siang district, the survey commenced in the Oyan/Jampani area, involving teams from East Siang and Dhemaji, along with officials from the Survey of India. Authorities reported that the process began smoothly without any issues. A similar exercise has been initiated in Lower Siang district as per the approved plan. In Lower Dibang Valley, survey activities are underway in coordination with the Tinsukia administration.

In the Lower Siang–Dhemaji sector, the survey covers three stretches spanning approximately 56.57 km. Work will begin in Stretch 2 (Telam area westwards), followed by Stretch 3 in the Likabali area, and finally Stretch 1 under the Nari circle.

The East Siang–Dhemaji sector includes two stretches. The first stretch runs from the geospatial point 95.371533°/27.848558° in the Oyan–Ruksin area up to the Depi river along the Lower Siang boundary, followed by the second stretch.

In the Lower Dibang Valley–Tinsukia sector, two stretches, Parbuk and Paglam, cover approximately 58.23 km. The Parbuk stretch survey is being led by the Parbuk SDO, while the Paglam stretch is under the supervision of the Paglam SDO.

The department also referenced earlier survey work conducted in the Pakke-Kessang sector in March 2026. By April 4, all border pillars established during that survey were re-observed on the ground in the presence of officials from both states and the Survey of India. This was described as a key milestone in the demarcation process.

Authorities have appealed to residents, especially those living in border areas, to cooperate with survey teams to ensure the smooth completion of the exercise.

Commercial LPG Price Jumps ₹993; Arunachal Rates Cross ₹3,300

New Delhi, May 1:

Oil marketing companies have announced a record increase in commercial LPG prices, with the cost of a 19 kg cylinder rising by ₹993, the steepest single-month hike so far. The revised rates came into effect from May 1 amid ongoing global energy pressures linked to tensions in West Asia.

Following the hike, prices of commercial LPG cylinders have crossed ₹3,000 in major metro cities. In Delhi, rates increased from ₹2,078.50 to ₹3,071.50, while Mumbai now stands at around ₹3,024. Kolkata and Chennai have also recorded sharp increases, with prices reaching ₹3,202 and ₹3,237 respectively.

Arunachal Pradesh has also been significantly affected by the latest price revision. The cost of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in the state has surged from around ₹2,330 to approximately ₹3,323. Due to higher transportation and logistical costs in the Northeast, prices in the region are typically higher than in metro cities, and the latest hike has further intensified the burden.

The sharp rise is expected to impact the hospitality sector and small businesses across the state, including restaurants, hotels, and street food vendors. Many are likely to revise prices of food items and services in response to increased operational costs.

The latest revision applies only to commercial LPG cylinders, while domestic LPG prices for household consumers remain unchanged for now.
