BJP Targets Congress Over Women’s Reservation at Itanagar Padyatra

Itanagar, April 28:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Arunachal Pradesh unit, held a “Jan Aakrosh Mahila Mashal Padyatra” protesting against the Indian National Congress and its allies over their opposition to the proposed 33% Women’s Reservation Bill, 2026.

The march began from the party’s state headquarters and proceeded along the National Highway, with participants carrying torches as part of the demonstration.

Key participants included Junty Singpho (State General Secretary), Nyabi Dirchi (MLA), and Nabam Yahi Tad (State President, BJP Mahila Morcha, Arunachal Pradesh).

They addressed the media during the event, stating that opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill would affect women’s opportunities in legislative bodies and called for a clear position from Congress and its allies.

BJP leaders accused opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), and TMK, of blocking women’s political representation and described their stance as “anti-women.” They urged clarity from the opposition and reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to women’s empowerment and greater participation in governance.

MLA Nyabi Dirchi noted that Arunachal Pradesh currently has only four women MLAs but said the proposed bill could significantly increase women’s representation in the state.

AdiSU Honours Anti-Drug Activist Gumin Mize

Pasighat, April 24:

The Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) felicitated Gumin Mize, President of the Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Warriors (APADW), in recognition of his dedicated efforts toward building a drug-free Arunachal Pradesh.

A prominent social activist, Mize has been at the forefront of a grassroots movement against drug trafficking and substance abuse, particularly in the East Siang and Itanagar regions. Through consistent community engagement, awareness drives, and active intervention, he has played a significant role in mobilizing youth and civil society against the growing menace of narcotics.

Widely regarded by locals as a “real-life hero,” Mize’s contributions were formally acknowledged in 2025 when he was named among the “Unsung Heroes of Arunachal.” His work includes tracking drug peddlers and strongly advocating for accessible, high-quality rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with addiction.

AdiSU, while honoring Mize, expressed its commitment to support his mission and collaborate in future initiatives aimed at curbing drug abuse and strengthening community resilience.

The recognition highlights the growing role of community-led efforts in addressing substance abuse and reinforces the importance of collective action in safeguarding the state’s youth.

Raghav Chadha Joins BJP, Big Blow to AAP

New Delhi, April 24:

In a significant political development, Raghav Chadha has officially announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, triggering a major split within the Aam Aadmi Party. The move is being seen as a substantial blow to AAP leadership, particularly party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Addressing a press conference, Chadha stated that a large section of AAP’s presence in the Rajya Sabha, reportedly around two-thirds of its 10 MPs, will merge with the BJP. He confirmed that the necessary documents have been signed and submitted to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, formalizing the transition.

Among those expected to join him are Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal, along with Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak. The development indicates one of the largest parliamentary shifts involving AAP since its formation.

Explaining his decision, Chadha delivered a sharp critique of his former party, alleging that AAP has strayed from its founding principles. He stated that the party, once built on anti-corruption and transparency, has become “corrupt and compromised.” Calling himself “the right man in the wrong party,” he said his move reflects a desire to reconnect with public expectations and governance priorities.

Picture from the press conference.

Sources suggest that Chadha’s entry into the BJP could be followed by a significant role at the national level, with speculation about a possible ministerial position gaining traction.

Chadha, a founding member of AAP since 2012, rose to prominence as a close aide to Kejriwal and played a key role in the party’s rise to power in Delhi in 2015. His departure marks a turning point for the party’s national ambitions and internal cohesion.

The BJP has not yet released a detailed statement on the development, but party insiders have welcomed the move, describing it as an endorsement of the BJP’s leadership and governance model.

The defection is expected to reshape the balance within the Rajya Sabha and intensify political contestation ahead of upcoming elections. For AAP, the loss of senior leadership and MPs may pose immediate organizational and strategic challenges.

AAPSU Warns Against Illegal Collections in Its Name

Itanagar, April 20:

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union has issued a public advisory cautioning people against unauthorized and illegal collection of money or materials in its name. The advisory, dated April 20, 2026, follows a resolution taken during the 1st Central Executive Council Meeting of the union for the 2026–2029 session.

In the notice, AAPSU informed the general public of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly market associations, bazaar committees, and members of the business community, that any form of collection carried out by anti-social elements in the name of the union or its office bearers is strictly prohibited. The union clarified that such activities include solicitation of donations, sale of union calendars, lottery or housie tickets, distribution of gift coupons, and forced collection of items such as watches, mobile phones, laptops, electronic goods, or any other materials.

AAPSU further stated that any legitimate appeal for voluntary contributions would be undertaken only through the joint recommendation of its authorized signatories, namely the President, General Secretary, and Finance Secretary. It emphasized that strict action will be initiated against any individual or group found engaging in illegal collection drives or misusing the name of the union. The advisory also warned that anyone tarnishing the image of the organization would not be spared.

The union urged the public to report any such illegal activities directly to its authorized office bearers without delay. The advisory has been circulated to Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police across all districts, along with market associations, bazaar committees, and media organizations for wider awareness and compliance.

The notice has been jointly signed by AAPSU President Meje Taku, Finance Secretary Zente Mosu, and General Secretary Mato Bui.

Khandu Blames Opposition, Mein Terms Women’s Bill Failure ‘Disappointing’

Itanagar, April 28:

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein expressed strong reactions after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, seeking to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies failed to pass in Parliament.

The bill secured 298 votes in the Lok Sabha, falling short of the 352 votes required for a constitutional amendment, leading to its rejection.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu directly blamed opposition parties for the outcome, stating that their obstruction of the amendment undermines the aspirations of crores of Indian women. He asserted that denying women adequate representation in legislative bodies goes against the spirit of inclusive development and warned that the response from India’s “Nari Shakti” would be “loud, decisive and unforgiving.”

In contrast, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein stopped short of naming any political party but termed the development a “deeply disappointing moment for democracy.” He described the bill’s failure as not just a legislative setback, but a blow to the hopes of millions of women seeking greater empowerment and participation in governance.

Mein emphasised that at a time when the nation highlights women as a driving force of progress, such outcomes create barriers to their advancement. He noted that the development has triggered concern and emotional response among women across the country, as delays in implementing reservation directly affect their participation in decision-making spaces.

Calling for a constructive way forward, Mein urged all stakeholders to rise above political differences and ensure that women’s dignity, rights, and aspirations are protected. He stressed that the democratic process must reinforce, rather than delay, women’s role in shaping the nation’s future.

The bill’s failure comes amid a broader political deadlock over the Centre’s proposal to link women’s reservation with a nationwide delimitation exercise, including plans to expand the Lok Sabha to 850 seats. Opposition parties resisted the move, citing concerns over population-based seat redistribution and its potential regional impact, particularly on southern states.

With the delimitation-linked proposal withdrawn, uncertainty now surrounds the timeline for implementing women’s reservation under the existing Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, keeping the issue at the centre of national political debate.

TIPRA Motha Wins Big in TTAADC Polls, Bags 24 of 28 Seats

Agartala, April 17:

The Tipra Motha Party has secured a landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, winning 24 out of 28 seats and establishing a commanding majority in the council.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure 4 seats, trailing far behind Tipra Motha’s dominant performance across the tribal regions of the state.

The emphatic mandate reflects strong grassroots support for Tipra Motha and its founder and leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma. A former chairman of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee and a member of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura, DebBarma founded the Tipra Motha Party with a focus on safeguarding the rights, identity, and socio-political aspirations of the indigenous tribal communities.

The party has consistently advocated for “Greater Tipraland,” a proposed constitutional solution aimed at ensuring greater autonomy, development, and protection of tribal interests within Tripura. Its growing popularity is largely driven by its strong regional identity politics and emphasis on inclusive development in tribal areas.

Reacting to the victory, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma extended his congratulations, highlighting the broader regional significance of the outcome. In a message, he stated:

“Congratulations my dear friend, Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma and to his party, the TIPRA Motha Party for the landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Our collective mission for OneNorthEast is strengthened by the victory. Great things to follow!”

Sangma’s remarks underscore the growing political cooperation and shared vision among regional leaders in the Northeast, particularly under the vision of “One North East,” aimed at fostering unity, development, and stronger regional representation.

Political observers believe that the decisive mandate will further empower Tipra Motha to push its agenda on indigenous rights, governance reforms, and development initiatives within the TTAADC framework.

With this sweeping victory, Tipra Motha not only consolidates its dominance in the council but also strengthens its position as a key regional political force in Northeast India.

APCC Demands CM Resignation After SC-Ordered CBI Probe

Itanagar, April 6:

Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bosiram Siram has called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister following the Supreme Court’s directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) preliminary inquiry into alleged irregular allotment of public contracts.

In an official press release, Siram welcomed the apex court’s intervention, describing it as a significant step toward exposing what he termed as “deep-rooted corruption, nepotism, and abuse of power” under the current state government. The inquiry reportedly concerns contracts worth over ₹1,270 crore, allegedly awarded to individuals with close ties to those in power.

Siram stated that the court’s order validates long-standing concerns raised by the opposition regarding the diversion of public resources for the benefit of a select few. He further alleged that the developments contradict the government’s claims of maintaining zero tolerance toward corruption.

The APCC president demanded that the Chief Minister step down on moral grounds pending the outcome of the investigation. He also called for a free, fair, and time-bound probe under judicial monitoring to ensure transparency and prevent any undue influence.

Additionally, Siram urged strict compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions, including preservation of official records and full cooperation with investigating agencies. He expressed concern that public institutions may have been misused to favor individuals with familial or political connections, undermining democratic governance.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to accountability and rule of law, Siram said the Congress would intensify its outreach across the state to mobilize public opinion against corruption and misuse of power.

The development marks a significant escalation in the political discourse in Arunachal Pradesh, with the opposition pressing for accountability as the investigation unfolds.

Tadar Baro Wins AAPSU Convenor Post by 385 Votes

Itanagar, April 5:

Tadar Baro has been elected as the Convenor of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union for the 2026–2029 term, defeating Charanso Halai by a margin of 385 votes in a closely watched and controversy-marked election.

Out of a total 2,061 votes cast, Baro secured 1,196 votes, while Halai received 811 votes. A total of 54 votes were declared invalid.

The election had earlier been mired in controversy after Baro filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Itanagar Police Station, alleging that Halai violated AAPSU bylaws due to active political affiliation. Baro claimed that Halai was associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party as a polling booth president in Tezu, which, if proven, would render him ineligible under student union norms. He had also urged both the AAPSU Election Commission and BJP leadership to look into the matter.

Significantly, both Baro and Halai had initially been disqualified during the nomination and scrutiny process by the AAPSU Chief Election Committee. Halai’s candidature was rejected over alleged violations of Article 9(a)(iv) and Article 20(3)(b) of the AAPSU Constitution, while Baro was disqualified for non-compliance with Article 25(b).

The twin disqualifications had triggered strong reactions among supporters, as both were seen as key contenders. The Election Committee maintained that its decisions were in line with constitutional provisions to ensure a fair and transparent process.

Despite the earlier setbacks and heightened tensions within the student community, both candidates ultimately contested the election, culminating in Baro’s decisive victory. The result marks the beginning of a new leadership phase for AAPSU, following one of its most contentious electoral processes in recent years.

Itanagar, March 25:

The AAPSU General Election 2026 election team has submitted a complaint at Itanagar Police Station seeking registration of an FIR against two individuals, Miss Khyoda Yallam and Shri Likha Maj, over the alleged creation and circulation of false and defamatory audio-video clips.

According to the complaint dated March 25, the individuals are accused of creating, circulating, and spreading audio-video clips with malicious intent against the election team to obtain undue advantage in the election process.

The complaint states that the clips are being widely circulated on social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Facebook, and allegedly refer to a “deal of five crore something,” falsely suggesting involvement of the election team. The team has denied any connection, stating that the contents are false, fabricated, misleading, and defamatory in nature.

It further states that the clips appear to have been circulated with malicious intent to damage reputation, create public confusion, and cause harm to the professional and personal standing of those involved.

The election team has requested authorities to register an FIR, conduct a thorough investigation to identify the origin, creators, and distributors of the clips, and take immediate steps to stop further circulation. The complaint also calls for strict legal action against all responsible persons under relevant provisions related to defamation, criminal conspiracy, and dissemination of false information through electronic means.

The team has stated that it is ready to cooperate with the investigation and provide any further information or evidence as required.

Stone Pelting Erupts Outside ABK Office Amid AdiSU Election Row

Pasighat, March 24:

The ongoing dispute surrounding the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) elections took a serious turn on Tuesday as protests intensified outside the Adi Bane Kebang (ABK) office, leading to clashes between two groups and incidents of stone pelting.

The unrest follows a formal representation submitted earlier by AdiSU (Apex) to the ABK leadership, seeking immediate intervention to halt what it termed as an “unlawful and forceful” attempt by the ABK Youth Wing to conduct a parallel election at Pasighat.

According to sources, tensions escalated when opposing groups gathered near the ABK office premises, resulting in heated arguments that quickly turned violent. Stone pelting was reported from both sides, creating panic in the area and disrupting normal movement.

AdiSU (Apex) had maintained that its elections were already conducted as per established norms and that a duly elected executive body is currently in office. The organization also raised concerns that any parallel election would not only be unauthorized but could interfere with the internal autonomy of AdiSU.

Further complicating the matter, the dispute is reportedly sub judice before the High Court, Itanagar Bench, raising legal concerns over the conduct of any fresh election during this period.

Security forces were rushed to the spot to control the situation and prevent further escalation. Authorities are closely monitoring the developments, while appeals for calm have been issued from multiple quarters.

The situation in Pasighat remains tense, with the possibility of further unrest if the matter is not resolved promptly.

APIYO Demands Cancellation of Non-APST ZPM in Vijayanagar

Itanagar, March 11, 2026:

The Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO) has demanded the immediate cancellation of the Zilla Parishad Member (ZPM) post held by Bhagat Chetry, a non-APST, who was elected from Vijayanagar in Changlang district during the recently concluded Panchayati Raj elections.

Addressing media persons at the Arunachal Press Club on Tuesday, APIYO president Taro Sonam Liyak questioned how a non-APST candidate was allowed to contest and win from Vijayanagar, which falls under a Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved Assembly constituency. He alleged that the development violates provisions meant to safeguard the rights and representation of indigenous tribal communities.

Liyak stated that allowing a non-APST individual to participate in Panchayati Raj elections in a tribal-reserved area undermines the protective framework provided under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873. According to him, such decisions by the district administration and concerned authorities could open the door for more non-APST participation in local governance structures in tribal areas.

The issue gained prominence after the Panchayat elections held in December, where Independent candidate Bhagat Chetry won the ZPM seat with a decisive margin. According to the final round of counting, Chetry secured 1,524 votes, defeating several local candidates. His nearest rival, Ngiyonu Ngawazah (BJP), received 918 votes, while Ngwayoza Yobin (Independent) secured 698 votes. Other candidates included Atibosa Yobin (INC) with 131 votes and Manzil Thakuri (Independent) with 36 votes. Chetry ultimately won the election by a margin of 606 votes.

ZPM election certificate from

The result triggered criticism in the politically and ethnically sensitive border constituency, with several members of the local Yobin community raising objections to the eligibility of a non-APST candidate holding a Panchayat position in the area.

Members of the Yobin tribe have reiterated that non-APST settlers are not indigenous to Vijayanagar and therefore should not be eligible to hold Panchayat posts under the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Act and the BEFR, 1873. In a press note issued on November 19, 2025, the Yobin community stated that non-APST settlers were earlier granted land on a 30-year lease, which expired in 2020.

Citing historical records and the 1961 Census, the community further maintained that Vijayanagar was originally inhabited exclusively by the Yobin people.

APIYO also claimed that local indigenous residents and student communities had raised objections to the participation of the non-APST candidate earlier but their concerns were not addressed by the district administration and concerned representatives.

The organisation said it has already submitted a representation to the Chief Minister seeking immediate intervention and cancellation of Chetry’s ZPM post. Liyak warned that if the government fails to respond to their demand, the organisation may take further steps.

Local community members have also stated that the election outcome has raised broader concerns regarding representation in local self-governance in the border constituency, highlighting the need for clarity and strict adherence to existing rules governing Panchayat elections while safeguarding the interests of indigenous residents.

Mutchu Mithi Calls for AAPSU Election Reforms

Roing, March 6, 2026:

Roing MLA and BJP leader Mutchu Mithi has called for structural reforms in the election process of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), from Rajiv Gandhi University to district and college units.

In a social media post, Mithi expressed concern that the current electoral system, which has a limited voter base and a restricted number of authorised electors, often leads elections to revolve around financial influence rather than merit. He stated that in such a system, voters may shift from choosing capable leaders to financially exhausting candidates.

Mithi suggested that expanding the size of the electorate and allowing every legitimate student to vote could help address the issue. According to him, a broader voter base would make it difficult to influence elections through money and restore the focus on merit and leadership qualities.

He further remarked that the present system appears to produce contestants who become financially burdened during the election process, stressing the need for reforms to ensure a fairer and more transparent electoral system within the student body.

His remarks have sparked discussions among student leaders and observers about the need to review the current electoral framework of AAPSU and explore possible reforms that could make the process more inclusive, transparent, and focused on leadership and student representation.

Bandh Call in Itanagar by Anti-Corruption Movement

Itanagar, March 4, 2026:

A 12-hour peaceful bandh has been called in Itanagar on March 5 by the Jan Andolan Anti-Corruption Movement, demanding accountability and transparency in alleged corruption cases.

The shutdown will be observed from 5 AM to 5 PM. The organization stated that the protest is aimed at pressing authorities to take concrete action over the allegations and ensure transparency in the matter.

The movement is being led by Shri Nabam Tagam. According to the organization, despite several representations submitted earlier and a deadline set for March 3, no action has been initiated against Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The group has therefore demanded an independent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure what it described as a fair and impartial probe.

Leaders of the movement have emphasized that the bandh will be conducted peacefully and democratically. They have appealed to citizens, business establishments, and civil society organizations to support the protest and join what they described as a fight against corruption.

The bandh call has sparked political discussions across Arunachal Pradesh, with attention now focused on how the situation unfolds on March 5.

Ex-MLA Tani Loffa Urges CM to Ban AAPSU Elections Over Rising Violence

Itanagar, March 21, 2026:

Former MLA and former student leader Tani Loffa has written to the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh seeking an immediate ban on the ongoing AAPSU election process, citing escalating violence.

For the past few months, the AAPSU election has witnessed numerous violence-related incidents. In January, stone pelting and alleged gunfire were reported inside the AAPSU office premises. A week ago, similar clashes occurred outside the AAPSU office, leaving several people injured. On Sunday night, two groups reportedly clashed within the DC office premises, resulting in multiple injuries and damage to property.

Amid such a concerning situation surrounding the ongoing AAPSU election, former leaders like Tani Loffa have stepped forward to raise their voice.

In his letter, Loffa described the situation as unprecedented and expressed concern over what he termed “ugly and uncalled violence.” He urged the state government to impose a total ban on AAPSU until normalcy is restored and further requested that no caretaker body be appointed during this period.

He appealed to the government to take necessary action in the interest of the state and the student community.

“APCC Panel Formed Over Ngorlung–Ralung Hunger Strike”

East Siang, March 1, 2026:

The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), under the leadership of its President Shri Bosiram Siram, has constituted an eight-member Fact-Finding Committee to examine concerns surrounding the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by mothers of Ngorlung–Ralung village in East Siang district.

The protestors are demanding the permanent closure or immediate relocation of the hazardous Ferro Silicon factory operated by Aether Alloys LLP at the Industrial Growth Centre, Niglok. According to the women, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh had earlier assured that the factory would be shifted, but the commitment remains unfulfilled.

The committee, led by APCC Vice President Smti. Yane Dai as Chairperson, with Advocate Tami Pangu as Vice-Chairman and Shri Daniel Gao as Member Secretary, visited the hunger strike site on Saturday. Members interacted with the protesting mothers and later conducted an on-site inspection of the Ferro Silicon unit at the Industrial Growth Centre to assess ground conditions.

Key Concerns Raised by the Protestors

Despite declining health due to the indefinite fast, many of the women highlighted serious issues, including:

Continuous emission of toxic smoke and dust affecting respiratory health

Increase in asthma, chronic cough, eye irritation, and skin ailments

Damage to agricultural fields and reduced crop productivity

Contamination of water sources impacting drinking water and livestock

Noise pollution and improper industrial waste disposal

Fear of long-term illnesses, including cancer and other life-threatening diseases

The protestors stated that their peaceful agitation aims to safeguard the health, environment, and future of their children and community.

Environmental and Health Risks

Ferro Silicon manufacturing is considered a high-risk industrial activity. The process involves high-temperature electric arc furnaces that emit silica dust and hazardous fumes. It can release particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), carbon monoxide, sulfur compounds, and other toxic pollutants. Additionally, industrial slag and waste may contaminate soil and groundwater if not properly managed. Significant carbon emissions further contribute to environmental degradation.

When such facilities operate near residential and agricultural areas without stringent pollution-control mechanisms, they pose substantial public health and ecological risks.

APCC members with the mother's of Ngorlung- Ralung village.

APCC’s Position

The APCC expressed solidarity with the mothers of Ngorlung–Ralung village in East Siang, stating that public health and environmental safety must take precedence over industrial interests.

The Fact-Finding Committee will submit a detailed report to APCC President Bosiram Siram after comprehensive study and stakeholder consultations. Based on the findings, the party stated it will take appropriate steps to seek accountability and ensure protection of community health and the environment.

The APCC has urged the State Government to act promptly, honour prior commitments, and address the concerns of the local community without further delay.

Dr. Jyoti Zongluju Raises Concern Over AAPSU Women Wing Post Removal

Itanagar, Feb 11, 2026

Legal Lady Dr. Jyoti Zongluju, Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, has expressed concern over the recent amendment of bye-laws by the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), which removed the posts of President, Women Wing and Vice President, Women Wing.

Statement by Dr. Jyoti Zongluju

According to her viewpoint, a student organization should serve as a torchbearer for the younger generation by promoting equality, integrity, discipline, and inclusive leadership.
