Two NE Youth Die in Delhi While Struggling for Jobs

Youth of Assam Being Prepared for Cremation
By The Members of Helping Hands Society.

New Delhi, May 12:

Two young men from Northeast India, both struggling to build a better future in the national capital, tragically lost their lives in separate incidents in Delhi, highlighting the harsh realities faced by many unemployed and underprivileged youths migrating from the region in search of livelihood.

According to Robin Hibu, an Assamese youth allegedly died by suicide, while a Manipuri youth reportedly died of a heart attack in Delhi on Tuesday.

The Manipuri youth’s mortal remains were flown back to Imphal in a coffin on Wednesday with the assistance of Helping Hands Society. Meanwhile, the Assamese youth was cremated at the Green Park crematorium in South Delhi.

Robin Hibu expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating that despite repeated appeals, no member of the Assamese community in Delhi came forward to assist in performing the final rites of the deceased youth. Eventually, Helping Hands volunteer Raj Hanand and a police personnel stepped in to conduct the cremation with dignity.

Another Helping Hands volunteer, Naresh Kumar, reportedly worked throughout the night to facilitate the transportation of the Manipuri youth’s body back home smoothly.

Sources said one of the deceased youths had been working in a low-paying job in Delhi, while the other had recently arrived in the city along with his younger sister in search of employment opportunities.

Sharing his grief, Robin Hibu questioned the lack of adequate opportunities for youths in the eight Northeastern states, saying many young people continue to migrate to metropolitan cities under difficult conditions, often facing isolation, exploitation, mental stress and extreme hardship.

He further noted that Helping Hands frequently assists in sending back the bodies of Northeastern youths who die while struggling for survival in big cities, calling it a painful and recurring reality.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing issue of unemployment, migration, and mental health challenges faced by youths from the Northeast region in urban centres across India.

New Delhi, May 10:

Two young women from Assam and Nagaland were allegedly harassed and physically assaulted in South Delhi’s Nehru Place, triggering fresh concerns over the safety and security of people from Northeast India in the national capital.

According to the victims, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday while they were at a roadside tea stall in the Nehru Place area. A group of men allegedly approached them, passed lewd remarks, and behaved aggressively. When the women objected to the harassment, the confrontation reportedly escalated into physical violence.

One of the victims alleged that her friend was slapped, surrounded, and assaulted by multiple men in public view. She further claimed that the attackers tore her friend’s clothes during the scuffle, while several bystanders recorded videos of the incident instead of stepping in to help.

The women also accused the police of responding slowly despite repeated pleas for assistance. They alleged that officials at the Kalkaji police station were initially reluctant to register an FIR. According to the victims, even after the Northeast Special Police Unit intervened in the matter, they were not provided with a copy of the complaint.

The ordeal reportedly continued even after the assault, with the victims alleging that the same group of men followed and intimidated them later. They also claimed that threats were issued against them through social media platforms.

Social activist Dr. Ghritashri Bhuyan Narula, who extended support to the victims, criticized the handling of the case by law enforcement agencies. She alleged that the police failed to take timely action despite the seriousness of the allegations and said the women had to be escorted home late at night due to security concerns. Narula stressed that incidents of molestation and public assault against women cannot be normalized and demanded immediate arrest of all those involved.

Confirming the development, Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi), stated that a case has been registered and the accused persons have been identified. He assured that arrests would be made soon.

Centre Targets 2029 to End Northeast Insurgency

New Delhi, April 27:

Following sustained success in curbing Left-Wing Extremism, particularly against groups such as the Communist Party of India (Maoist), People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, and Maoist Communist Centre, the Centre has redirected its security focus toward ending insurgency in Northeast India, setting an ambitious deadline of 2029. The initiative will begin with Manipur as the primary focus area.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the government plans to redeploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), particularly specialized units like the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), from former Maoist-affected regions to insurgency-affected northeastern states including Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. The phased redeployment is expected to commence after the West Bengal Assembly Elections and the Amarnath Yatra later this year.

Officials indicated that Manipur remains the most affected state, accounting for 77% of all insurgency-related incidents in the Northeast in 2024. Of the 16 active insurgent groups across the region, 8 are based in Manipur, followed by 3 in Assam, 2 each in Meghalaya and Tripura, and 1 in Nagaland. The state recorded 226 insurgency-related cases last year, the highest in the region.

Security preparations are already underway, including the deployment of mine-protected and bulletproof vehicles to sensitive districts such as Ukhrul. In parallel, the Centre has directed the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to intensify crackdowns on drug trafficking networks, which are believed to finance insurgent activities.

The Centre’s strategy combines targeted security operations, force redistribution, and strengthened anti-narcotics measures, with the goal of making the Northeast insurgency-free by 2029.

TIPRA Motha Wins Big in TTAADC Polls, Bags 24 of 28 Seats

Agartala, April 17:

The Tipra Motha Party has secured a landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, winning 24 out of 28 seats and establishing a commanding majority in the council.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure 4 seats, trailing far behind Tipra Motha’s dominant performance across the tribal regions of the state.

The emphatic mandate reflects strong grassroots support for Tipra Motha and its founder and leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma. A former chairman of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee and a member of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura, DebBarma founded the Tipra Motha Party with a focus on safeguarding the rights, identity, and socio-political aspirations of the indigenous tribal communities.

The party has consistently advocated for “Greater Tipraland,” a proposed constitutional solution aimed at ensuring greater autonomy, development, and protection of tribal interests within Tripura. Its growing popularity is largely driven by its strong regional identity politics and emphasis on inclusive development in tribal areas.

Reacting to the victory, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma extended his congratulations, highlighting the broader regional significance of the outcome. In a message, he stated:

“Congratulations my dear friend, Pradyot Bikram Manikya DebBarma and to his party, the TIPRA Motha Party for the landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Our collective mission for OneNorthEast is strengthened by the victory. Great things to follow!”

Sangma’s remarks underscore the growing political cooperation and shared vision among regional leaders in the Northeast, particularly under the vision of “One North East,” aimed at fostering unity, development, and stronger regional representation.

Political observers believe that the decisive mandate will further empower Tipra Motha to push its agenda on indigenous rights, governance reforms, and development initiatives within the TTAADC framework.

With this sweeping victory, Tipra Motha not only consolidates its dominance in the council but also strengthens its position as a key regional political force in Northeast India.

Imphal, March 15, 2026:

Several parts of Manipur were lashed by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail on 15 March, as a sudden weather system swept across the state bringing strong winds and intense showers. The storm developed rapidly during the afternoon hours, with dark clouds followed by heavy rainfall and hailstones striking multiple areas.

Residents in several localities reported that the hailstorm lasted for several minutes, with hailstones hitting rooftops, vehicles, and open fields. The strong winds and rainfall briefly disrupted normal activities as people rushed indoors for safety while the storm passed through the region.

The aftermath of the storm saw damage to houses and property, particularly structures with tin roofs which were dented by falling hailstones. Some vehicles parked in open areas also sustained minor damage as the hail struck during the intense downpour.

Farmers in several rural areas expressed concern over possible damage to standing crops and vegetable plantations, as the hail and strong winds hit agricultural fields. The storm raised fears of crop losses in certain areas where farming activities are currently underway.

In addition to property and agricultural damage, the storm also caused temporary disruptions to daily life, with heavy rain and gusty winds affecting visibility on roads and leading to brief power interruptions in some localities.

Despite the damage, the rainfall brought temporary relief from the prevailing warm weather conditions across the state, although the accompanying hail and winds created challenges for residents and farmers.

Meanwhile, similar weather conditions were reported in parts of Meghalaya on the same day. Areas including Tura in West Garo Hills district experienced heavy rainfall and hail during a powerful thunderstorm that damaged houses, vehicles, and crops.

Following the incident, the government of Meghalaya reviewed the situation, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma directing officials to assess the damage and ensure assistance to affected households. District administrations were instructed to conduct field assessments and monitor the situation closely.

Weather officials noted that such pre-monsoon thunderstorms are common across the northeastern region during the months of March and April, often bringing lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds, and occasional hailstorms.

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as forecasts indicate the possibility of further thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms across parts of Northeast India in the coming days.

Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently met the young women from Northeast India who were allegedly subjected to racial abuse in Delhi and helped them relocate to a safer and more secure place.

The incident came to light after a video showing a heated altercation between the women and their neighbours in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage across the Northeast. The dispute reportedly began after drilling work for the installation of an air conditioner at the women’s rented apartment caused dust and debris to fall onto the floor below. The situation soon escalated into a confrontation during which the women were allegedly targeted with racial slurs.

Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested Ruby Jain in connection with a case involving alleged racial abuse and insulting language against three women from Northeast India in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area, officials said. The arrest followed an investigation into an FIR registered at the Malviya Nagar Police Station.

New Delhi, February 23, 2026:

Congress MP from Inner Manipur, A. Bimol Akoijam, has strongly condemned the recent racial harassment faced by three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, describing the incident as part of a troubling pattern of discrimination against people from Northeast India.

Speaking during a press briefing, Akoijam highlighted the repeated instances of racial bias experienced by youths from the region in metropolitan cities across the country. He demanded strong and exemplary action against the accused, stating that strict measures are necessary to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

The MP also drew attention to what he described as a deeper structural issue, pointing out the limited presence of Northeast India’s history, society, and culture in school textbooks. According to him, the absence of comprehensive representation contributes to a lack of awareness among large sections of mainland India, making the region and its people largely invisible in the national narrative.

Calling for awareness and sensitivity, Akoijam urged authorities, educational institutions, and civil society to work collectively towards combating racism and promoting inclusivity. The incident has sparked renewed debate on representation, education, and the safety of Northeast communities across India.
