New Delhi, May 12:

Two young men from Northeast India, both struggling to build a better future in the national capital, tragically lost their lives in separate incidents in Delhi, highlighting the harsh realities faced by many unemployed and underprivileged youths migrating from the region in search of livelihood.

According to Robin Hibu, an Assamese youth allegedly died by suicide, while a Manipuri youth reportedly died of a heart attack in Delhi on Tuesday.

The Manipuri youth’s mortal remains were flown back to Imphal in a coffin on Wednesday with the assistance of Helping Hands Society. Meanwhile, the Assamese youth was cremated at the Green Park crematorium in South Delhi.

Robin Hibu expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating that despite repeated appeals, no member of the Assamese community in Delhi came forward to assist in performing the final rites of the deceased youth. Eventually, Helping Hands volunteer Raj Hanand and a police personnel stepped in to conduct the cremation with dignity.

Another Helping Hands volunteer, Naresh Kumar, reportedly worked throughout the night to facilitate the transportation of the Manipuri youth’s body back home smoothly.

Sources said one of the deceased youths had been working in a low-paying job in Delhi, while the other had recently arrived in the city along with his younger sister in search of employment opportunities.

Sharing his grief, Robin Hibu questioned the lack of adequate opportunities for youths in the eight Northeastern states, saying many young people continue to migrate to metropolitan cities under difficult conditions, often facing isolation, exploitation, mental stress and extreme hardship.

He further noted that Helping Hands frequently assists in sending back the bodies of Northeastern youths who die while struggling for survival in big cities, calling it a painful and recurring reality.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing issue of unemployment, migration, and mental health challenges faced by youths from the Northeast region in urban centres across India.
