Areca Nut Traders Raise Alarm Over Digital Scale Scam

Concerns have intensified across the Mahadevpur area, Namsai, and nearby Sadiya region after local betel nut (areca nut) sellers exposed an alleged weighing machine scam that reportedly caused heavy financial losses to small traders. Sellers claim that certain buyers used manipulated digital weighing machines that showed significantly lower readings, reducing the recorded weight by nearly 7 kilograms per sack.

The issue gained widespread attention after an areca nut seller who first identified the discrepancy uploaded a video on social media. In the video, the seller is seen demonstrating the weighing process and alleging that the buyers had “scammed 7 kg from each sack of areca nut.” Expressing frustration, he declared that he would recover every penny lost through the alleged manipulation. The clip quickly circulated among local trading communities, triggering discussions about fair trade practices and the need for stricter monitoring.

According to multiple vendors, suspicions arose when earnings did not match expected market rates despite consistent harvest volumes. Some traders later cross-checked their produce using certified weighing scales and discovered major differences, prompting calls for collective action. Local residents and traders’ groups have urged authorities to inspect weighing equipment used in regional markets and take action against those found guilty of fraudulent practices.

Community leaders have also advised sellers to remain cautious during bulk sales, especially when dealing with unfamiliar buyers or privately owned weighing machines. Many traders are now demanding regular verification drives and stronger enforcement to protect small-scale farmers and sellers from exploitation.
