Absconding Drug Kingpin Arrested in Assam After Year-Long Manhunt

 

Seijosa, April, 3:

In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Pakke Kessang district police in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested an absconding kingpin of a drug racket who had been on the run since 2025.

The accused, Mafizul Islam, son of Late Samar Ali and a resident of Kekakoli Nepali Gaon under Charduar Police Station in Assam, was apprehended at around 3:30 AM during a coordinated operation conducted at his hideout in Assam.

Police sources confirmed that the accused was wanted in connection with Seijosa Police Station Case No. 04/25, registered under Sections 21(B) and 27 of the NDPS Act. He had been evading arrest since the case was registered last year and is believed to be a key figure in a drug trafficking network operating across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

The operation was closely monitored by Superintendent of Police, Pakke Kessang, Smti. Sweta Singh (IPS). The team on the ground was led by DSP Kiksi Yangfo and included Sub-Inspector and Officer-in-Charge Sang Thinley, ASI Laxman Sahu, Head Constable Gopesh Ranjan, Constable T. Karbi, Constable T. Akin, and Lady Constable K. Tawe, along with personnel from the 3rd IRBn, Monai (Seijosa).

Officials stated that the successful arrest was made possible with active support from the Assam Police, particularly the team from Charduar Police Station, who assisted in tracking and apprehending the accused.

Following the arrest, police revealed that several other individuals linked to the drug supply network are currently under surveillance, and further operations are expected in the coming days.

Officer-in-Charge Sang Thinley expressed appreciation for the cooperation extended by the Assam Police, highlighting the importance of inter-state coordination in tackling organized drug trafficking.

The arrest of the main kingpin marks a major step in dismantling drug networks in the region and reinforces the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the spread of narcotics.

Namsai Drug Bust: 57g Heroin Seized, Key Peddler Arrested

 

Namsai, April 2:

In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Namsai Police have dismantled a drug peddling network within a span of 12 days, arresting key accused individuals and recovering a total of 57 grams of suspected heroin in two separate operations. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth several lakhs in the illegal market.

The operations were carried out under the overall supervision of Superintendent of Police Sangey Thinley (APPS).

The first operation took place on March 20, 2026, following credible intelligence inputs. A police team conducted a raid at an abandoned rented premises near a petroleum pump, approximately 1 km from 2nd Mile in Namsai. During the raid, one accused, identified as Sujita Kungkung, was apprehended. A search of the premises led to the recovery of a soap case containing approximately 15 grams of suspected heroin.

In a subsequent operation on April 2, 2026, police acted on further intelligence along the Solungtoo Highway. A Suzuki Ignis (Registration No. AR-20A-5547) was intercepted, resulting in the arrest of Chow Pingta Choutang, identified as a key peddler in the region. During the search of the vehicle, approximately 41 grams of suspected heroin, concealed in soap cases within the centre console, were recovered.

Accused Sujita Kungkung

All seizures were conducted in accordance with legal procedures, in the presence of independent witnesses, and documented through e-Sakshya. Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.

The operations were led by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) team under Dy. SP Kengo Dirchi, SDPO Namsai, along with Inspector A. Pandey, L/SI K. Kimsing, SI R. Kahik, and Special Branch personnel, with support from local police.

Further investigation is underway to trace backward and forward linkages within the drug network.

Namsai Police reiterated their commitment to curbing drug trafficking and urged the public to assist by sharing information related to illegal drug activities.

ACB Arrests Another Accused in ₹130 Cr Highway Compensation Scam

 

Itanagar, April 2:

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Arunachal Pradesh has intensified its crackdown on the alleged multi-crore land compensation scam linked to the Lada-Sarli stretch of the Arunachal Frontier Highway, with the arrest of another accused.

Karbia Rebe (39), a resident of Rebe village in East Kameng district, was apprehended in Itanagar on March 31, 2026, after being summoned for questioning. He was produced before a local court on April 1 and subsequently remanded to judicial custody at Jully Jail.

According to ACB officials, Rebe is suspected to be one of the beneficiaries involved in fraudulent claims during the land compensation process. His arrest follows crucial leads uncovered in the ongoing financial investigation tracing the flow of funds. Authorities indicated that the probe is expanding, and further arrests are likely in the coming days, targeting both private individuals and government officials, including personnel from the District Land Settlement and Revenue department.

The case revolves around alleged irregularities in the disbursement of nearly ₹130 crore as land compensation for the 125.5-km Lada-Sarli stretch of the Frontier Highway (NH-913), a strategically significant project aimed at enhancing connectivity along the India–China border in East Kameng district.

Preliminary findings point to widespread malpractice, including inflated compensation claims, fabrication of assets, and diversion of funds. The investigation has already led to multiple arrests. Former District Land Revenue and Settlement Officer Takam Kechak was taken into custody in December 2025 and re-arrested in January 2026. Several middlemen, including Rajo Gyadi, Yayo Yangfo, and Khya Byagang, were also arrested in January for allegedly facilitating bribes amounting to over ₹19 crore in certain segments.

By early February 2026, authorities had arrested at least four individuals and seized approximately ₹11.5 crore in connection with the case.

The ACB is currently conducting package-wise re-verification of land records and compensation claims, following growing public demand for a comprehensive investigation. Calls have also emerged from civil society groups to transfer the case to central agencies such as the CBI and ED for a more extensive probe.

The Lada-Sarli Frontier Highway project is considered vital for strengthening border infrastructure, making the alleged scam a matter of serious concern due to its scale and the involvement of both officials and private beneficiaries.

Nirjuli Drug Bust: Two Held with 31 Heroin Vials

 

Nirjuli, April 2:

In a sustained crackdown on drug trafficking, the ICR Naharlagun Police apprehended two suspected drug peddlers and seized 31 vials of heroin during a targeted operation in Nirjuli on Wednesday.

According to an official press release from the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Naharlagun, the operation was conducted on April 2 at around 2:30 PM following credible intelligence inputs regarding the transportation of heroin from Banderdewa for distribution across the Itanagar Capital Region.

Acting on the input, a police team led by Inspector Tadu Hassang, Officer-in-Charge of Nirjuli Police Station, carried out the operation under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Dr. Nyelam Nega. The team intercepted a TVS NTORQ scooter without a registration number at the Viaduct Bridge in Dikrong, Nirjuli.

Two individuals were apprehended at the scene and identified as Khyoda Tama (24), a resident of Jollang near Central Jail, Itanagar, and Bamang Raju (29), a resident of Dokum Colony, Itanagar.

Seized Vials of Heroin from the Operation 

During the search, police recovered 31 vials of heroin weighing 39.96 grams (including the weight of the vials) from their possession. The contraband, along with the scooter, was seized in the presence of independent witnesses, adhering to all legal procedures.

A case has been registered at Nirjuli Police Station (Case No. 18/26) under Sections 21(b)/27 of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is currently underway.

Police officials reiterated their commitment to intensifying action against drug trafficking and ensuring a drug-free environment in the region.

Arunachal Steps Up Drive to Prevent Child Marriage Ahead of Akshaya Tritiya

 

Yupia, March 31:

The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has issued an official order directing authorities in Papum Pare district to intensify efforts to prevent child marriages ahead of the upcoming festival of Akshaya Tritiya.

The directive, issued by the Office of the Deputy Director, District ICDS Cell, Yupia, follows instructions from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the state’s Department of Women and Child Development. Authorities have been asked to conduct widespread awareness campaigns across villages, panchayats, urban wards, and district levels.

Akshaya Tritiya, considered an auspicious occasion in the Hindu calendar, has historically seen a higher likelihood of child marriages being conducted. In view of this, religious leaders in the district have been strictly instructed not to solemnize or support any child marriage under any circumstances. They have also been urged to report any such incidents immediately to the nearest police station or the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer (CMPO).

The order assigns specific responsibilities to various departments and stakeholders. Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) and Anganwadi workers will lead grassroots awareness drives. Coordination with religious leaders and service providers involved in marriage functions—such as tent providers, printing presses, and marriage hall operators—will also be undertaken to sensitize them about legal provisions against child marriage.

Education authorities, including the DDSE and DEO, have been directed to prepare lists of school dropouts or children absent without proper notice, as they are considered vulnerable to early marriage. Additionally, officials are tasked with identifying at-risk children and ensuring continuous monitoring, counseling, and family engagement to prevent such cases.

All stakeholders have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the order and take proactive measures. An Action Taken Report must be submitted by April 7, 2026.

The order was issued under the authority of Deputy Commissioner Vishakha Yadav, IAS, as part of a coordinated effort to safeguard children’s rights and curb illegal child marriages in the district.

Missing Naharlagun Minor Rescued from Guwahati

 

Naharlagun, April 2:

A minor girl reported missing from Naharlagun since March 26, 2026, was successfully traced and rescued from Guwahati following prompt and coordinated action by police teams across states.

Acting on the complaint, Inspector K. Dev, Officer-in-Charge of Naharlagun Police Station, tracked the girl’s movement to Fancy Bazaar in Guwahati after confirming that she had boarded a bus from Naharlagun. Preliminary findings indicated that she had left home out of fear of parental scolding over poor academic performance.

Upon reaching Guwahati, the girl was reportedly approached by two suspected women who attempted to mislead her, raising concerns of possible trafficking. Based on timely inputs shared by Naharlagun Police, a team from Pan Bazaar Police Station swiftly intervened, located the minor, and ensured her safe rescue.

She was subsequently brought back and reunited with her family. The suspected women managed to flee upon noticing the police presence.

Superintendent of Police, ICR, Dr. Nyelam Nega, stressed the importance of parental guidance, care, and emotional support for young individuals, particularly during difficult phases, to help prevent such incidents.

Itanagar Lawyers Protest Assault, Seek Protection Law

 

Itanagar, April 2:

Members of the Gauhati High Court Itanagar Permanent Bench Bar Association staged a peaceful rally on Wednesday, protesting the alleged assault of advocate Gegum Lollen and pressing for stronger legal safeguards for lawyers.

The rally, held from Mithun Gate to IG Park’s Tennis Court area, was organized in solidarity with Lollen, who was reportedly attacked on March 31 at his residence in Kameng Colony, Papu Nallah.

According to the association, the accused identified as Likha Akash along with accomplices,

allegedly entered Lollen’s residence unlawfully and physically assaulted him, triggering concern within the legal fraternity.

Calling the incident a grave attack on the dignity and safety of legal professionals, the association reiterated its longstanding demand for the implementation of an Advocates Protection Act in the state. Members emphasized that such legislation is essential to ensure the safety and independence of advocates.

The Bar Association has also demanded the immediate arrest of all individuals involved in the incident. In addition, it resolved to file a separate institutional FIR to ensure the case is pursued beyond an individual complaint.

At an emergency meeting held on March 31, the association unanimously decided to enforce its 2012 resolution, which prohibits members from representing the accused in this case. Violations of this directive may result in disciplinary measures, including suspension or cancellation of Bar membership.

The protest concluded peacefully, with advocates reaffirming their commitment to legal integrity and collective action for professional security.

Seppa Police Arrest 3, Seize 322g Cannabis

 

Seppa, April 1:

In a coordinated anti-narcotics operation, police in Seppa seized 322 grams of suspected cannabis and arrested three individuals during a search conducted in the New Seppa area on Wednesday afternoon.

The operation was led by the DySP (HQ), Seppa. The search and seizure were carried out in the presence of independent witnesses and an Executive Magistrate, ensuring adherence to legal procedures and transparency.

The individuals apprehended have been identified as:

Mama Natung (24), resident of Sede under Pijirang circle

Lulu Weshi (26), resident of Weshi Village under Pakoti circle

Durga Doka (25), resident of Type-III Colony under Seppa circle

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, 1985. Police confirmed that all legal formalities were followed during the operation.

Further investigation is ongoing to uncover both forward and backward linkages in the suspected drug supply network.
