Tapir Gao Raises Opium Cultivation Issue in Lok Sabha

 

New Delhi, March 30:

Tapir Gao, Member of Parliament from Arunachal East, raised the issue of legalising opium cultivation in parts of Arunachal Pradesh during a session of the Lok Sabha, specifically highlighting districts which border Myanmar in the eastern Arunachal that fall within his constituency.

Highlighting the historical context, Gao stated that opium cultivation has existed in the region since the British era and has become embedded in the traditional practices of certain tribal communities in eastern Arunachal Pradesh. He noted that despite its long-standing presence, the Narcotics Control Bureau continues to conduct annual drives to destroy illicit poppy cultivation in these areas.

Raising concerns over the recurring destruction of crops and its impact on local communities, Gao questioned whether the Centre could explore the possibility of legalising opium cultivation under a regulated framework for commercial purposes. He suggested that such an approach could help balance law enforcement with the socio-economic realities of the region.

Responding to the query, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that opium cultivation requires strict regulation, particularly in sensitive border regions and Naxal-affected areas. She clarified that opium cultivation in India is currently permitted only in notified tracts across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. She further informed the House that there is no proposal at present to regularise or legalise opium cultivation in any other region.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Narcotics oversees licensed opium cultivation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The government issues an annual Opium Policy specifying notified areas and conditions for cultivation, under which licensed farmers are required to sell their entire produce to the government at fixed rates. At present, this regulated framework is limited to select tracts in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

NSCN (IM) Cadre Surrenders in Changlang

 

Changlang, March 30:

In a development aimed at strengthening ongoing efforts to bring insurgent elements back into the mainstream, a cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) (NSCN-IM) surrendered before security forces in Changlang district on Monday.

The individual, identified as Jungron Chena (30), a resident of the district, laid down arms and ammunition before the Officer-in-Charge of Changlang Police Station in the presence of personnel from the Assam Rifles.

According to district police sources, the surrender was the result of sustained efforts by Changlang Police to motivate local youth involved in insurgent activities to return to the mainstream and reintegrate into society. Officials stated that such initiatives are part of a broader approach to ensure a peaceful environment while providing former cadres an opportunity to lead a dignified life with their families.

Authorities have reiterated their appeal to other misguided youth to shun violence and take advantage of rehabilitation measures offered by the government.

Arunachal Pradesh marked a proud culinary milestone at the prestigious Times Food & Nightlife Awards, where its indigenous cuisine drew significant attention among leading names from India’s food and hospitality industry.

A dedicated stall representing the state showcased an array of traditional dishes at The Westin Mumbai Powai Lake, offering guests a rich experience of Arunachal’s unique flavours. Specialties such as Chambai, Amin, Black Rice, and Tasse, paired with local herb chutneys, Sumac Cold Brew, and Smoked Green Tea, attracted long queues, reflecting growing interest in the region’s culinary heritage.

Leading the initiative, Chef Pinkey Veo, along with her team comprising Yami Veo, Techi Seema, and Seema Gyamar Dodum, ensured that Arunachal’s traditional flavours stood out among 34 award-winning restaurants from Mumbai.

The initiative was jointly undertaken by the Department of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. It was coordinated by Taste Palate under the guidance of Jugnu Gupta, a noted food critic associated with the awards.

The participation marks a significant step in promoting Arunachal Pradesh’s culture, cuisine, and tourism on a national platform, reinforcing its growing presence in India’s evolving culinary landscape.

High Mast Lights Installed at Deepak Nabam Living Home Under DCM Chowna Mein’s Initiative

 

Itanagar, March 30:

In a significant initiative to improve facilities for vulnerable communities, two high mast light towers have been installed at the Deepak Nabam Living Home in Arunachal Pradesh, enhancing safety and living conditions for its residents.

The initiative was undertaken through the personal efforts of Chowna Mein, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of the state. One high mast light has been installed at the Deepak Nabam Living Home located at Senki Park in Itanagar, while the second has been set up at its facility in Doimukh.

The newly installed lighting systems are expected to significantly enhance visibility, strengthen security, and improve the overall well-being of the destitute, deprived, and marginalized residents at both locations.

Founder and the person behind the management, Deepak Nabam, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and especially to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for the thoughtful and impactful initiative. He described the effort as a meaningful step toward ensuring dignity and better living conditions for those in need.

The development reflects the state government’s continued focus on welfare-oriented initiatives and inclusive support for underprivileged sections of society.

Orchid Nest Café Inaugurated in Sessa, West Kameng to Boost Tourism

In a notable initiative aimed at strengthening tourism and enhancing livelihood opportunities in remote border areas, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Gajraj Corps, inaugurated the Orchid Nest Café at Sessa in West Kameng district.

The café has been developed through a joint effort of the Indian Army and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project VARTAK, reflecting a coordinated push toward infrastructure development and community support in strategically important regions. Nestled in the picturesque Sessa Valley, close to the strategically significant Nichephu Tunnel, the Orchid Nest Café is expected to emerge as a convenient stopover for tourists, local residents, and security personnel.

Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic landscapes, the facility offers a welcoming space for visitors travelling through the region, which has seen increasing tourist interest in recent years. The café provides essential amenities, refreshments, and rest facilities, making travel through this stretch more comfortable and accessible.

Beyond improving visitor experience, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities for local residents, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of West Kameng district. By involving local communities, the project also aims to ensure sustainable growth while preserving the natural and cultural essence of the region.

Officials highlighted that such initiatives play a crucial role in promoting border tourism, which not only brings economic benefits but also fosters stronger connections between remote communities and the rest of the country. The development of small yet impactful infrastructure like the Orchid Nest Café is part of a broader effort to make border areas more vibrant and self-sustaining.

Naharlagun Police, Bazar Committees Meet to Curb Extortion

 

Naharlagun, March 30:

A coordination meeting was held on Monday between Naharlagun Police, ICR, and Bazar Welfare Committees under the Naharlagun jurisdiction, chaired by Dr Nyelam Nega.

The meeting was attended by the Additional Superintendent of Police, SDPO Naharlagun, Officers-in-Charge of Naharlagun, Papu Hills, Nirjuli, and Banderdewa police stations, along with chairmen, presidents, and secretaries of Bazar Welfare Committees from the respective areas.

During the meeting, committees were urged to immediately report any instances of forceful donation or extortion by unions, associations, or individuals. Police officials assured that strict legal action would be taken upon receiving such complaints.

Participants were also encouraged to inform the police about any illegal activities in their areas. In response to concerns raised by committee members, police advised the installation of CCTV cameras at vulnerable locations to strengthen surveillance and improve security.

The meeting also addressed issues related to cleanliness and other local concerns, emphasizing coordinated efforts between the police and community stakeholders to maintain law and order in Naharlagun and adjoining areas.

Field Trainers’ Training for Census 2027 Begins in Tawang

 

Tawang, March 30:

The preparatory phase for Census 2027 gained momentum in Arunachal Pradesh as a training programme for Field Trainers commenced at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Tawang on Monday.

The session is being conducted under the guidance of Master Trainer Dr. Dargey Tsering, Statistical Verification Officer (SVO), along with Shri Manturaj Nath, Research Officer (Map), from the Directorate of Census Operations, Arunachal Pradesh.

Addressing the participants, Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, IAS, underscored the crucial responsibility of field trainers in ensuring the success of the nationwide census exercise. She emphasized that trainers must develop a clear and comprehensive understanding of procedures to effectively guide enumerators and field staff. Highlighting the importance of accuracy and accountability, she stated that reliable census data forms the backbone of policy planning and developmental initiatives across the country.

Earlier, Additional District Census Officer Tenzin Jambey welcomed the participants and introduced the master trainers. He encouraged trainees to actively participate in the sessions, raise queries, and maintain focus throughout the programme to maximize learning outcomes.

Master Trainer Dr. Dargey Tsering expressed confidence in the trainees, stating that the programme would equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to efficiently train field-level personnel ahead of the census operations.

The training programme marks a significant step in strengthening groundwork for Census 2027, ensuring improved preparedness, accuracy, and efficiency in data collection across Tawang district.

Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles carried out a civic outreach initiative on March 28, 2026, at Old Paniduria village in Tirap district, focusing on improving the quality of life in remote areas through sustainable solutions.

The programme, conducted under the Assam Rifles Civic Action Programme, involved the distribution of solar lights to local residents. The initiative is aimed at addressing the challenges of limited electricity access in the region by providing reliable and eco-friendly lighting. Improved illumination is expected to enhance safety, support daily activities, and contribute to overall community well-being.

Sambo Lapung once again brought pride to Arunachal Pradesh by securing a gold medal in the 110 kg men’s weightlifting category at the first edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games held in Chhattisgarh.

Popularly known as Arunachal’s “Golden Boy,” Lapung showcased an exceptional performance, adding another major achievement to his name. His victory reflects both his dedication and strength, while also strengthening Arunachal’s presence on the national sports stage.

The inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games marks a significant initiative by the Government of India to identify, nurture, and promote sporting talent from tribal communities across the country. Bringing together athletes from various states, the Games aim to provide a competitive platform while preserving and celebrating indigenous sporting traditions.

Arunachal gets highest ₹4,900 crore under Pride of Hills scheme

New Delhi, March 29:

Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as the largest beneficiary under the Centre’s newly introduced “Pride of Hills” component of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) for 2026–27, securing an allocation of ₹4,900 crore out of the total ₹25,000 crore outlay earmarked for hill states.

The initiative has been designed to address the unique financial and developmental challenges faced by hill states, including difficult terrain, low population density, and limited revenue-generating capacity. With Arunachal Pradesh receiving the highest share among all eligible states, the move signals a strong push by the Centre to accelerate development in the frontier state.

The additional funding, which is over and above regular central allocations, is expected to significantly boost capital expenditure in key sectors such as infrastructure and connectivity. Improved road networks, better access to remote regions, and enhanced economic linkages are likely to be among the immediate outcomes if the funds are effectively utilized.

Arunachal Pradesh, which continues to rely heavily on central transfers due to its geographical and fiscal constraints, stands to benefit substantially from this targeted support. The allocation is also expected to complement the state’s ongoing focus on infrastructure-led growth, particularly in areas such as rural connectivity, tourism, and strategic development.

The “Pride of Hills” scheme reflects a broader policy approach aimed at strengthening hill states with additional financial backing, enabling them to overcome structural challenges and achieve faster, more balanced development. Alongside Arunachal Pradesh’s ₹4,900 crore allocation, Himachal Pradesh has been allotted ₹3,920 crore, Nagaland ₹3,880 crore, Uttarakhand ₹3,460 crore, Tripura ₹3,450 crore, Manipur ₹2,400 crore, Meghalaya ₹2,070 crore, Sikkim ₹820 crore, and Mizoram ₹100 crore, highlighting a wide distribution of funds across hill states under the initiative.

Tawang Hosts Vipassana Programme; MLA Announces Biannual Meditation Camps

 

Tawang, March 29:

A programme on “Introduction to Vipassana Meditation – A Path to Inner Peace and Mental Well-being” was successfully conducted at Kalawangpo Convention Hall in Tawang on Sunday afternoon, drawing participation from public representatives, officials, and local residents.

The event was sponsored and organised by MLA Lungla, Tsering Lhamu, and coordinated by Sangey Sangey Phuntsok Nguimo. The session featured resource persons Diganta Kalita and Rishikesh Ji, Trustee of the Assam Vipassana Trust, Guwahati, who provided insights into the practice and benefits of Vipassana meditation.

Among the dignitaries present were ZPC Tawang Leki Gombu, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rinchen Leta, and ZPMs Tenzin Monpa, Pema Tsering, Tsering Yangzom, and Sonam Norzin. Other attendees included Pema Ngawang, Ngawang Norbu, Jampa Tsering, along with members of the general public.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Tsering Lhamu underlined the increasing importance of mental well-being in today’s fast-paced lifestyle. She noted that despite access to material comforts, mental health is often neglected, contributing to rising cases of stress, anxiety, and depression. She also highlighted the growing negative impact of excessive social media use on mental health.

In a key announcement, the MLA stated that Tawang will host two 10-day Vipassana meditation camps annually, one during summer and another in winter, aimed at promoting inner peace, emotional balance, and overall mental wellness within the community.

The programme concluded with a positive response from participants, reflecting growing awareness and interest in meditation practices as a means to achieve mental clarity and well-being.
