3 Dead, Several Hospitalised in Changlang–Bordumsa Mushroom Poisoning

Changlang, April 7:

Changlang district has reported a series of alarming mushroom poisoning incidents over the past week, prompting urgent public health advisories from authorities.

In Changlang, nine individuals from two separate families reportedly fell ill after consuming wild mushrooms suspected to be toxic. All were promptly admitted for medical treatment and have since recovered due to timely intervention by healthcare professionals.

However, a more tragic incident occurred in Bordumsa, where four members of a single family consumed wild mushrooms. Three of them lost their lives, while one individual survived and is undergoing treatment.

Health experts believe the cases may be linked to the consumption of a toxic wild mushroom species, most likely Chlorophyllum molybdites, commonly found during the rainy season. This species is often mistaken for edible mushrooms due to its similar appearance, making it particularly dangerous.

Medical officials have warned that several toxic mushroom varieties closely resemble edible ones and can cause severe health complications, including vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, seizures, and even organ failure.

Dr. Gumlat Ong Maio, Medical Officer In-Charge of Community Health Centre (CHC) Bordumsa, urged the public to exercise extreme caution and strictly avoid consuming wild mushrooms.

The district administration has issued a public advisory with the following key guidelines:

Do not collect or consume wild mushrooms

Consume mushrooms only from verified and safe sources

Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear after consumption

Spread awareness within the community to prevent further incidents

Authorities have emphasized that even experienced collectors can misidentify toxic mushrooms, and have particularly cautioned against serving such food to vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

AdiSU Bandh Violence as Stone Pelting Injures Police in Pasighat

Pasighat, April 8:

A 24-hour bandh called by the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) turned violent on Tuesday, with incidents of stone pelting reported from multiple locations across Pasighat. The unrest resulted in injuries to several police personnel and at least one civilian, escalating concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the region.

The bandh was announced by AdiSU following the detention of its Vice President Dutin Jamoh and former General Secretary Ton Boli during an incident at the Deputy Commissioner’s office earlier in the day. Protesting the action, the union warned that the shutdown would be strictly enforced if the detained members were not released within two hours.

Nongku Aje, President of the AdiSU East Siang Unit, held the district administration accountable for any consequences arising from the situation, alleging that the authorities’ actions had provoked public unrest.

Further intensifying the situation, Tanyo Burang, President of the AdiSU Upper Siang Unit, raised objections to the re-election process scheduled at Sibo village. He cautioned that proceeding with the election amid ongoing disputes could trigger further unrest and warned that both the district administration and the Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) would be held responsible for any untoward incidents.

With tensions continuing to rise, the situation in Pasighat remains volatile as authorities monitor developments closely ahead of the bandh and the controversial re-election process.

APCC Demands CM Resignation After SC-Ordered CBI Probe

Itanagar, April 6:

Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bosiram Siram has called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister following the Supreme Court’s directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) preliminary inquiry into alleged irregular allotment of public contracts.

In an official press release, Siram welcomed the apex court’s intervention, describing it as a significant step toward exposing what he termed as “deep-rooted corruption, nepotism, and abuse of power” under the current state government. The inquiry reportedly concerns contracts worth over ₹1,270 crore, allegedly awarded to individuals with close ties to those in power.

Siram stated that the court’s order validates long-standing concerns raised by the opposition regarding the diversion of public resources for the benefit of a select few. He further alleged that the developments contradict the government’s claims of maintaining zero tolerance toward corruption.

The APCC president demanded that the Chief Minister step down on moral grounds pending the outcome of the investigation. He also called for a free, fair, and time-bound probe under judicial monitoring to ensure transparency and prevent any undue influence.

Additionally, Siram urged strict compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions, including preservation of official records and full cooperation with investigating agencies. He expressed concern that public institutions may have been misused to favor individuals with familial or political connections, undermining democratic governance.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to accountability and rule of law, Siram said the Congress would intensify its outreach across the state to mobilize public opinion against corruption and misuse of power.

The development marks a significant escalation in the political discourse in Arunachal Pradesh, with the opposition pressing for accountability as the investigation unfolds.

SC Orders CBI Probe into Arunachal Contract Row Involving CM Pema Khandu

Delhi, April 6:

The Supreme Court of India on Monday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into allegations of irregular allotment of public contracts by the Arunachal Pradesh Government to firms allegedly linked to relatives of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria passed the order while hearing a petition filed by the Save Mon Region Federation and Voluntary Arunachal Senaa.

The Court directed the CBI to submit its report within 16 weeks, indicating whether a full-fledged independent investigation is warranted. The agency has been tasked with examining contracts awarded between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2025, while retaining the liberty to extend the scope of inquiry if required.

During the proceedings, Senior Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioners, alleged large-scale irregularities in the awarding of government contracts. According to the petition, contracts and tenders worth approximately ₹1,270 crore were awarded to firms associated with the Chief Minister’s family members, including his spouse, mother, and nephew.

The Court further directed the State Government and its departments to fully cooperate with the CBI and furnish all relevant records within four weeks. It also ordered that no documents related to the case be destroyed. Additionally, the Chief Secretary has been instructed to appoint a nodal officer within a week to coordinate with the investigating agency.

The petition raises concerns over alleged favouritism in awarding key tenders to close associates of the Chief Minister. It specifically mentions a construction firm, M/s Brand Eagles, reportedly linked to his spouse, and M/s Alliance Trading Co., owned by his nephew Tsering Tashi, which were allegedly granted contracts without due procedure.

Suprem court of india

The petitioners had approached the apex court in 2024 seeking an independent probe by the CBI or a Special Investigation Team. The Court had issued notice to the respondents in January 2024 and later, in March 2025, sought detailed responses from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and the State Government regarding the allocation of public work tenders.

The matter also draws parallels with a 2024 case involving former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, where the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) was asked to examine similar allegations of awarding contracts to firms linked to family members.

During earlier hearings in March last year, then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna had observed that the CAG report referred to the Code of Conduct prescribed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which prohibits ministers from granting undue advantage to relatives upon assuming office.

The initiative aimed not only to provide immediate relief but also to promote long-term health awareness among the local populace.

Such outreach programs by the Indian Army play a crucial role in bridging the healthcare gap in far-flung regions of Arunachal Pradesh. The locals expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its significance in improving their overall well-being.
