“Arunachal Pradesh Observes Major Bob Khathing Day, Honouring a Legacy of Peaceful Nation-Building

Arunachal Pradesh, February 24, 2026

February 14, widely recognised as Valentine’s Day, holds a deeper historical significance in Arunachal Pradesh and across the Northeast. The day is observed as Major Bob Khathing Day, commemorating a pivotal moment in India’s history when diplomacy, courage, and trust shaped the nation’s frontiers without bloodshed.

On February 14, 1951, Major Ralengnao “Bob” Khathing led a landmark expedition to Tawang, where the Indian Tricolour was peacefully hoisted, formally integrating the region into the Indian Union without a single shot being fired. At a time when territorial consolidation elsewhere was often marked by conflict, the mission stood out as a rare example of nation-building achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding.

A decorated World War II veteran who later served as a senior administrator in independent India, Major Khathing demonstrated a leadership style grounded in empathy, cultural awareness, and firm resolve. His engagement with local communities in the then North-East Frontier Agency reflected a belief that lasting integration depends not only on governance but also on respect for people, identity, and tradition.

Remembering Major Bob Khathing on this day highlights a different expression of love—one rooted in service to the nation, restraint in the face of challenge, and responsibility toward future generations. In an era of increasingly polarised public discourse, his legacy continues to underscore the importance of inclusion and mutual trust in strengthening unity.

As Arunachal Pradesh marks Major Bob Khathing Day, the occasion encourages younger generations to look beyond symbolic celebrations and reconnect with the histories that shaped the region’s place within India. The observance stands as a tribute not only to an extraordinary individual, but also to the enduring ideals of peace, dignity, and national unity.

Areca Nut Traders Raise Alarm Over Digital Scale Scam

Concerns have intensified across the Mahadevpur area, Namsai, and nearby Sadiya region after local betel nut (areca nut) sellers exposed an alleged weighing machine scam that reportedly caused heavy financial losses to small traders. Sellers claim that certain buyers used manipulated digital weighing machines that showed significantly lower readings, reducing the recorded weight by nearly 7 kilograms per sack.

The issue gained widespread attention after an areca nut seller who first identified the discrepancy uploaded a video on social media. In the video, the seller is seen demonstrating the weighing process and alleging that the buyers had “scammed 7 kg from each sack of areca nut.” Expressing frustration, he declared that he would recover every penny lost through the alleged manipulation. The clip quickly circulated among local trading communities, triggering discussions about fair trade practices and the need for stricter monitoring.

According to multiple vendors, suspicions arose when earnings did not match expected market rates despite consistent harvest volumes. Some traders later cross-checked their produce using certified weighing scales and discovered major differences, prompting calls for collective action. Local residents and traders’ groups have urged authorities to inspect weighing equipment used in regional markets and take action against those found guilty of fraudulent practices.

Community leaders have also advised sellers to remain cautious during bulk sales, especially when dealing with unfamiliar buyers or privately owned weighing machines. Many traders are now demanding regular verification drives and stronger enforcement to protect small-scale farmers and sellers from exploitation.

MP Tapir Gao Raises Vijaynagar Connectivity Issue in Parliament; Telecom Minister Assures Support

Delhi, Feb 11, 2026

Arunachal Pradesh East constituency MP Tapir Gao on Wednesday raised concerns in Parliament over persistent mobile connectivity issues in Vijaynagar, Changlang district, stating that residents and paramilitary forces stationed there continue to face severe communication challenges despite the presence of BSNL and Airtel towers.

Speaking during Question Hour, Gao said weak network signals often prevent calls from connecting, disrupting daily life and hampering coordination in the remote border region. He noted that the installation of optical fibre cable (OFC) and expansion of telecom infrastructure remain difficult as the route to Vijaynagar passes through hundreds of kilometres within Namdapha National Park.

Urging the Union Telecom Ministry to find a practical and timely solution, the MP emphasized the need for reliable telecom services in the strategically important area.

Responding to the issue, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said that national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which restricts large-scale infrastructure development to safeguard biodiversity. However, he assured that the Centre would extend full support and work closely with the Arunachal Pradesh government and Chief Minister Pema Khandu to address the connectivity challenges.
