APCC Demands Fresh NEET Exam Over Alleged Paper Leak Row

Itanagar, May 13:

Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bosiram Siram on Tuesday strongly condemned the alleged NEET paper leakage controversy, accusing the BJP-led Central Government of failing to protect the credibility and integrity of the country’s examination system.

In a press statement issued from Itanagar, Siram said the repeated incidents of paper leaks and examination irregularities have severely shaken public confidence and pushed the country into an “educational crisis.” He alleged that corruption and systemic failures had compromised the future and aspirations of lakhs of students across India.

“The nation is steadily losing faith in the entire examination system under the BJP regime. From vote chori to paper chori, people are witnessing corruption and manipulation even in sensitive national examinations,” Siram stated.

The APCC chief criticised the Centre for its alleged silence and inaction over repeated examination controversies and demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister, holding him morally responsible for the alleged failures surrounding national-level examinations.

Siram also demanded an immediate re-conduct of the NEET examination under strict supervision and transparent mechanisms to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for students.

Among the key demands placed before the Government of India were a fair and time-bound investigation into the alleged paper leak, strict punishment for those involved in the alleged malpractice racket, strengthening of examination security systems, and protection of students’ academic and mental well-being.

He further raised concerns over the difficulties faced by students from Arunachal Pradesh, especially from remote districts, who are often forced to travel outside the state to appear for national-level examinations such as NEET and CUET due to the lack of adequate examination centres.

Siram urged the Ministry of Education and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to establish and strengthen NEET and CUET examination centres across Arunachal Pradesh to ensure equal educational opportunities for students of the frontier state.

Reiterating support for students and parents, Siram said the APCC stands firmly with the academic community and youth in safeguarding their future and aspirations.

New Delhi, May 12:

Two young men from Northeast India, both struggling to build a better future in the national capital, tragically lost their lives in separate incidents in Delhi, highlighting the harsh realities faced by many unemployed and underprivileged youths migrating from the region in search of livelihood.

According to Robin Hibu, an Assamese youth allegedly died by suicide, while a Manipuri youth reportedly died of a heart attack in Delhi on Tuesday.

The Manipuri youth’s mortal remains were flown back to Imphal in a coffin on Wednesday with the assistance of Helping Hands Society. Meanwhile, the Assamese youth was cremated at the Green Park crematorium in South Delhi.

Robin Hibu expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating that despite repeated appeals, no member of the Assamese community in Delhi came forward to assist in performing the final rites of the deceased youth. Eventually, Helping Hands volunteer Raj Hanand and a police personnel stepped in to conduct the cremation with dignity.

Another Helping Hands volunteer, Naresh Kumar, reportedly worked throughout the night to facilitate the transportation of the Manipuri youth’s body back home smoothly.

Sources said one of the deceased youths had been working in a low-paying job in Delhi, while the other had recently arrived in the city along with his younger sister in search of employment opportunities.

2 NSCN Militants Killed in Assam Rifles Operation in Changlang

Changlang, May 11:

In a major counter-insurgency operation, two alleged militants linked to the banned insurgent outfit National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) were killed during an encounter with security forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, officials said on Tuesday.

According to security sources, the operation was carried out by the Assam Rifles following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement and presence of armed NSCN cadres in the Miao sector near Songking village under Miao Police Station.

The operation reportedly began late Monday evening in a densely forested area close to the Indo-Myanmar border, a region known for insurgent activities due to its difficult terrain and porous international boundary. Acting on the intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles personnel launched a search and cordon operation in the suspected hideout area.

Officials stated that during the operation, the security team came under fire from suspected militants, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire that continued for some time. In the ensuing encounter, two suspected NSCN militants were neutralized. No injuries or casualties were reported among the security personnel involved in the operation.

Sources further informed that the militants were allegedly operating from temporary camps in the forest area and were suspected to be involved in extortion activities targeting local residents, contractors, traders, and businesses in nearby areas.

Following the encounter, security forces recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from the site. The seized materials reportedly include firearms, live ammunition, communication equipment, and other items believed to have been used by the insurgents during their operations.

The identities of the deceased militants are yet to be officially confirmed, and authorities are currently working to ascertain their exact affiliations within the NSCN network. Officials have also not ruled out the possibility of additional militants hiding in nearby forest areas.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified combing and search operations across adjoining locations to prevent any regrouping by insurgent elements and to ensure the area is fully secured.

The successful operation is being viewed as a significant achievement for security agencies engaged in anti-insurgency efforts across Northeast India, particularly in border districts vulnerable to militant movement and cross-border activities.

New Delhi, May 10:

Two young women from Assam and Nagaland were allegedly harassed and physically assaulted in South Delhi’s Nehru Place, triggering fresh concerns over the safety and security of people from Northeast India in the national capital.

According to the victims, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday while they were at a roadside tea stall in the Nehru Place area. A group of men allegedly approached them, passed lewd remarks, and behaved aggressively. When the women objected to the harassment, the confrontation reportedly escalated into physical violence.

One of the victims alleged that her friend was slapped, surrounded, and assaulted by multiple men in public view. She further claimed that the attackers tore her friend’s clothes during the scuffle, while several bystanders recorded videos of the incident instead of stepping in to help.

The women also accused the police of responding slowly despite repeated pleas for assistance. They alleged that officials at the Kalkaji police station were initially reluctant to register an FIR. According to the victims, even after the Northeast Special Police Unit intervened in the matter, they were not provided with a copy of the complaint.

The ordeal reportedly continued even after the assault, with the victims alleging that the same group of men followed and intimidated them later. They also claimed that threats were issued against them through social media platforms.

Social activist Dr. Ghritashri Bhuyan Narula, who extended support to the victims, criticized the handling of the case by law enforcement agencies. She alleged that the police failed to take timely action despite the seriousness of the allegations and said the women had to be escorted home late at night due to security concerns. Narula stressed that incidents of molestation and public assault against women cannot be normalized and demanded immediate arrest of all those involved.

Confirming the development, Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi), stated that a case has been registered and the accused persons have been identified. He assured that arrests would be made soon.

Khangri Glacier Expedition Warns of Rising GLOF Threat in Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang, May 10:

The 5th Khangri Glacier Scientific Expedition (2026) has been successfully completed in the remote Mago Chu Basin of Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh, marking another significant milestone in long-term glacier monitoring efforts in the Eastern Himalayas.

The scientific mission commenced on May 4, 2026, focusing on the climate-sensitive Khangri Glacier, one of the least-explored glacier systems in the region. The expedition revealed several alarming signs of rapid environmental and geomorphological transformation linked to climate change and rising temperatures.

Major Findings from the Expedition

During the field study, researchers observed that the glacier snout is rapidly collapsing, leading to the formation of unstable terrain and increasing geomorphological vulnerability in the region.

One of the most concerning discoveries was the formation of a proglacial lake at an altitude of nearly 16,500 feet. Scientists warned that the newly formed lake could pose a serious Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) threat to downstream areas of the Mago Chu Basin if instability increases in the future.

The expedition team also recorded critically high glacier melt rates despite comparatively healthy winter snowfall this year. Experts stated that ongoing climate variability and rising temperatures continue to accelerate glacier retreat across the Eastern Himalayas.

Scientific Activities Conducted

To strengthen long-term cryosphere monitoring and glacier research, the team successfully installed five new scientific monitoring stakes at elevations reaching up to 17,000 feet.

The expedition further carried out detailed snow density and glacier mass balance measurements to assess annual accumulation and melting patterns. Researchers also collected data from Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to analyse extreme weather conditions and retrieved hydrological data from Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLR) for water-flow and flood-related assessments.

Additionally, moraine and water samples were collected from the glacier snout for advanced scientific analysis.

Joint Scientific Initiative

The expedition was jointly conducted by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies.

Since 2022, both institutions have been carrying out systematic field-based glacier monitoring in the Eastern Himalayas to generate critical scientific data on glacier sensitivity to global warming and climate change impacts.

Speaking on the expedition, Er. Nyelam Sunil, Head of the Cryosphere Division at the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), stated that the 5th Khangri Glacier Scientific Expedition was among the toughest expeditions undertaken since the programme began in 2022 due to challenging terrain, weather conditions, and the remote high-altitude environment.

Scientists emphasized that the Eastern Himalayan cryosphere remains one of India’s most vulnerable mountain ecosystems. Through continuous monitoring, collaborative research, and scientific assessment, the expedition aims to contribute toward the protection of fragile Himalayan ecosystems and downstream communities dependent on glacier-fed water resources.
