10 Sacred Statues Stolen from Dirang Monastery

A shocking theft at Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery in Dirang has left the local community distressed and outraged after ten sacred statues were reportedly stolen from the premises.

The incident came to light when members of the monastery discovered that several niches, once home to revered idols, had been left empty, with ten statues found missing from their designated places. The missing statues were not merely artistic creations but objects of deep spiritual importance, symbolizing faith, devotion, and the cultural heritage of the region.

Residents and devotees have expressed strong emotions over the incident, calling it a serious violation of a sacred space. Many described the loss as deeply personal, noting that the statues formed an integral part of their belief system and identity.

The theft has also raised concerns about the safety and security of religious institutions in the area. Monasteries, traditionally known for their openness and peaceful environment, may now face increasing pressure to adopt stronger protective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Community members have urged for swift action and the safe return of the stolen idols. At the same time, authorities are yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident.

Though it is not yet certain whether the theft at the Dirang monastery was carried out by visiting tourists or locals, recent incidents in western Arunachal Pradesh have drawn attention to a pattern of thefts involving tourists, particularly in popular destinations such as Tawang.

Just days ago, a woman tourist was reportedly captured on CCTV stealing clothes from a shop in Nehru Market in Tawang. In another incident, sacred items were stolen from Buddha Park in Tawang by a tourist from West Bengal, who was later apprehended. He was subsequently released after being pardoned by a monk from the Buddha Park.

The case has reignited broader discussions around the need to respect religious sites and preserve cultural heritage. As the situation unfolds, residents of Dirang continue to await clarity and hope for the recovery of the sacred statues.

PWD Engineer Killed as Tree Falls on SUV on NH-13 in Arunachal

In a tragic incident triggered by inclement weather, a 43-year-old Public Works Department (PWD) engineer lost his life after a tree, uprooted by heavy rain and strong winds, fell on a moving vehicle along National Highway-13 in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday morning.

The accident took place at around 8:00 am on the Potin–Posa stretch of NH-13, specifically between Pitapull and Potin. According to police, a Toyota Fortuner travelling from Itanagar towards Pipsorang was struck by a massive log that suddenly collapsed onto the passenger side of the vehicle amid intense rainfall and gusty winds sweeping across the region.

The deceased has been identified as Deken (Deccan) Sorang (43), who was serving as a Junior Engineer under the Public Works Department and was posted in Pipsorang under Kra Daadi district. He was travelling in the front passenger seat at the time of the incident. Accompanying him was the driver, Shan Rai (36), a resident of Dhemaji district in neighbouring Assam.

Superintendent of Police of Keyi Panyor district, Angad Mehta, stated that the force of the falling tree was devastating. The log struck the vehicle directly on the side where Sorang was seated, leading to fatal injuries and his instantaneous death at the scene. The driver, although physically unharmed, suffered severe shock due to the sudden and violent nature of the incident. He was immediately shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Yazali, where he is currently undergoing medical observation and treatment.

Local police and emergency responders rushed to the accident site soon after receiving information. A rescue operation was swiftly carried out to extricate the victims from the damaged vehicle. The body of the deceased was later transported to the CHC for necessary procedures.

Officials informed that an inquest has been conducted in accordance with legal protocols. Further formalities, including post-mortem procedures and handing over of the body, are being carried out in coordination with the bereaved family members.

The incident highlights the risks posed by extreme weather conditions in hilly terrains, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when landslides, falling trees, and road blockages are common. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution while travelling through vulnerable stretches of highways during adverse weather.

This unfortunate event has cast a pall of grief over the department and the local community, as colleagues and acquaintances mourn the untimely demise of the engineer.

Thinwang Deosa Surrenders in Tirap with Weapon

In a significant development, a cadre of the NSCN-IM surrendered before security forces in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on April 24, 2026.

The individual has been identified as SS Lieutenant Thinwang Deosa (60), a resident of Sanliam village under Lazu Circle in Tirap District. 

He surrendered at the Superintendent of Police’s office in Khonsa in the presence of Tirap Police and personnel from the Assam Rifles.

During the surrender, Deosa handed over one 7.65 mm pistol (made in the United States), along with a magazine and seven live rounds of ammunition.

Officials stated that the surrender marks a positive step toward ongoing efforts by security forces to restore peace, stability, and development in the region, which has long been affected by insurgent activities.

In a significant push toward strengthening grassroots administration, Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung on Saturday inaugurated a series of key infrastructure facilities at the newly established Debeyar Circle Headquarters in Nere.

The inaugurated facilities include the Circle Office for the Debeyar Circle Officer, residential quarters for the Circle Officer, a Panchayat Bhawan, a Guest House, and a Forest Guest House. These developments are aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and ensuring better service delivery in the region.

Addressing the gathering, the Home Minister emphasized that the establishment of the circle headquarters marks a crucial step in bringing governance closer to the people. He stated that decentralization of administrative services would significantly reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for basic government services.

Following the inauguration, Natung interacted with Gaon Buras, Panchayat members, and community representatives at the Nere General Ground. The event was attended by ZPC Smti Pai Pizi Yangfo, ZPM Shri Demo Cheri, Advocate Kasung Cheda, Shri Elosan Hiffo Tadung (ADC), and various Heads of Departments.

Officials confirmed that with the formal commencement of the Debeyar Circle Headquarters, essential public services such as issuance of Birth Certificates and Permanent Resident Certificates (PRCs) have started locally from today. The initiative aligns with the government’s “Seva Aapke Dwaar” approach, aimed at delivering accessible, inclusive, and people-centric governance at the grassroots level.

The move is expected to improve administrative outreach, strengthen local governance, and accelerate development activities in the region.

Rare Natural Triplet Birth Successfully Delivered at Itanagar Hospital

 

Itanagar, April 24:

In a remarkable medical achievement, a 30-year-old woman from Kurung Kumey district safely delivered healthy, full-term triplets through a caesarean section at Polo Hospital.

Triplet pregnancies are widely regarded as high-risk due to increased chances of complications for both the mother and the babies. Such cases are most often associated with assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, in this instance, the pregnancy was entirely natural, making it exceptionally rare.

The complex surgical procedure was successfully led by gynaecologist Dr Posting Bayang Neri, along with MS Dr Meli Dodum. Despite the inherent risks involved in multiple births, the medical team reported that the operation proceeded smoothly without any intra-operative or post-operative complications.

Dr Neri highlighted the uniqueness of the case, stating that spontaneous triplet pregnancies carried to full term are extremely uncommon. He further confirmed that both the mother and the newborns are in stable condition and recovering well, reflecting a highly successful maternal and neonatal outcome.

According to hospital sources, each of the three babies weighed approximately 2.3 kilograms at birth, an impressive weight for triplets, and none required admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Authorities at Polo Hospital commended the medical team for their expertise and coordinated effort in ensuring a safe delivery. They noted that full-term natural triplet births without complications are exceedingly rare, making this case a significant milestone for the hospital and the region’s healthcare system.

AdiSU Honours Anti-Drug Activist Gumin Mize

The Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) felicitated Gumin Mize, President of the Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Warriors (APADW), in recognition of his dedicated efforts toward building a drug-free Arunachal Pradesh.

Raghav Chadha Joins BJP, Big Blow to AAP

 

New Delhi, April 24:

In a significant political development, Raghav Chadha has officially announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, triggering a major split within the Aam Aadmi Party. The move is being seen as a substantial blow to AAP leadership, particularly party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Addressing a press conference, Chadha stated that a large section of AAP’s presence in the Rajya Sabha, reportedly around two-thirds of its 10 MPs, will merge with the BJP. He confirmed that the necessary documents have been signed and submitted to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, formalizing the transition.

Among those expected to join him are Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal, along with Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak. The development indicates one of the largest parliamentary shifts involving AAP since its formation.

Explaining his decision, Chadha delivered a sharp critique of his former party, alleging that AAP has strayed from its founding principles. He stated that the party, once built on anti-corruption and transparency, has become “corrupt and compromised.” Calling himself “the right man in the wrong party,” he said his move reflects a desire to reconnect with public expectations and governance priorities.

Sources suggest that Chadha’s entry into the BJP could be followed by a significant role at the national level, with speculation about a possible ministerial position gaining traction.

National Panchayat Day 2026 was celebrated with remarkable scale and enthusiasm in East Kameng district, setting a new benchmark not only for the district but across the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Organized under the theme “Atmanirbhar Panchayat Se Samriddh Bharat Tak,” the event marked a historic milestone as the first large-scale Panchayat Day celebration of its kind in the region, reflecting a strong commitment toward grassroots governance and rural development.

The programme was meticulously organized by the Panchayat Department of East Kameng under the leadership of Smti. Pai Pizi Yangfo, Zilla Parishad Chairperson (ZPC) of 03-East Kameng and Organising Chairman. The event witnessed the collective efforts of all 13 Zilla Parishad Members (ZPMs), Panchayat staff, and Block Offices, whose coordinated planning and execution ensured a vibrant and well-managed celebration. In an inspiring display of determination and resilience, Binila Khumukcham, a student from Jiribam Babupara in Manipur, has achieved remarkable success in the Higher Secondary Examination (HSE) 2026 conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM). Despite living with cerebral palsy and being unable to use her hands, she secured 67.4% in the Commerce stream, earning a First Division and reportedly the highest marks in her stream from Jiribam.

Binila’s journey has been marked by extraordinary perseverance. With limited physical mobility in her hands, she performs her daily activities, including writing and academic work, using her feet. Over the years, she has adapted to her circumstances with determination, developing the ability to study, write exams, and complete tasks independently through sheer practice and willpower.

In a remarkable act of generosity, Shri Rigo Bam, son of Late Tori Bam, from Old Bam Village under Basar Circle, has taken the initiative to cover the school admission fees for all students of Classes X to XII at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Basar for the 2026–2027 academic session.

In a similar gesture, Dr. Todak Taba, son of Late Sento Taba, from Tai Village under Tirbin Circle, has committed to bearing the admission fees for students from Class I to X at Government Secondary School (GSS) Tai for the same session.

Appreciating their contributions, Basar MLA Nyabi Jini Dirchi expressed deep admiration for the two individuals, describing their actions as an extraordinary example of community spirit and social responsibility.

Papum Pare Reviews Monsoon Preparedness, Releases Disaster Plan

 

Itanagar, April 24:

A district-level review meeting on monsoon preparedness was held at the DC Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman, DDMA, Shri Lobsang Tsering. The meeting assessed readiness measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

During the programme, the District Disaster Management Plan was officially released in the presence of ZPC Smt. Bamang Yayu, ADC Balijan Shri Takar Rava, ADC (Hq) Smt. Tame Yajum, and other officials.

Addressing the gathering, DC Shri Lobsang Tsering stated that while adequate manpower and equipment are available, effective coordination among all stakeholders remains crucial during disaster situations. He also highlighted that several disasters in the Itanagar region are human-induced and called for greater public responsibility.

ZPC Smt. Bamang Yayu raised key concerns, including the need to include the Head of Project of Panyor Lower Hydro Power Station (PLHPS) in disaster management meetings, citing that most downstream areas fall under Papum Pare district. She also flagged recurring power disruptions in Kimin during monsoon and delays in road clearance following landslides.

Representatives from NDRF, the medical department, NEEPCO Limited, and Highway/PWD divisions presented their preparedness plans and outlined response strategies.

District Disaster Management Officer Shri Nima Tashi informed that a control room has been set up at the headquarters and urged all administrative officers to ensure preparedness at subdivision and circle levels.

All departments have been directed to maintain buffer stock of essential commodities and remain fully prepared to respond to any emergencies during the monsoon season.
