Rare Yellow Puffball Mushroom Found in Longding

A rare and striking yellow-coloured puffball mushroom has been documented in Longding district, highlighting the rich yet largely unexplored fungal biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh.

The discovery was made on June 4, 2026, during a field visit to Zedua village by a team from ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Longding. The mushroom was found growing naturally on decaying woody debris and organic-rich soil.

Based on its distinctive yellow globose fruiting body and puffball-like morphology, the specimen was tentatively identified as Bovista colorata, commonly known as the Yellow Puffball Mushroom, by Dr. Deep Narayan Mishra, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Pathology), ICAR-KVK, Longding.

While detailed microscopic examination and molecular studies are required for definitive taxonomic confirmation, a preliminary review of available scientific literature indicates that documented records of this species from Longding district are currently lacking. If confirmed, the finding could represent one of the earliest documented field records of Bovista colorata from the district and a valuable addition to the known macrofungal diversity of Arunachal Pradesh.

Unlike conventional mushrooms that produce spores through gills beneath a cap, puffball fungi generate millions of microscopic spores within a closed, spherical fruiting body. As the mushroom matures, its internal tissue transforms into a fine powdery spore mass that is dispersed by wind, raindrops, or physical disturbance, enabling efficient long-distance spread.

Ecologically, species of Bovista play a vital role as decomposers. They contribute to the breakdown of lignocellulosic plant residues, nutrient recycling, carbon cycling, and the formation of soil organic matter, thereby supporting ecosystem health and soil fertility.

Several puffball species are also recognized for their nutritional value. Young fruiting bodies have been reported to contain proteins, dietary fibre, essential amino acids, minerals, and antioxidant compounds. Scientific studies have further identified bioactive metabolites with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential pharmaceutical properties.

Historically, puffball spores have been used in certain traditional cultures as natural wound-dressing materials due to their moisture-absorbing and haemostatic characteristics. However, experts caution against consuming wild mushrooms without proper identification, as some immature poisonous species can closely resemble edible puffballs.

The observation underscores the immense but underexplored fungal wealth of the Eastern Himalayan region and highlights the need for systematic surveys, herbarium documentation, microscopic characterization, and DNA barcoding of wild macrofungi. Such research is essential for understanding their ecological significance and unlocking their agricultural, nutritional, medicinal, and biotechnological potential.

The field documentation was carried out with the active participation and support of other ICAR-KVK Longding scientists, including Shri Vikas, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture), and Dr. Amit Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (Land and Water Management Engineering).

AAPMWC Seeks Equal Action on Undocumented Religious Institutions in ICR

Itanagar, June 6:

The All Arunachal Pradesh Masjid Welfare Committee (AAPMWC) has urged the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) administration to ensure that any action concerning unauthorized religious institutions is carried out uniformly and without discrimination among different faiths.

Addressing the media on Saturday, AAPMWC member Giah Limpeh Sultan stated that if authorities are examining the legality and documentation of mosques and masjids operating in the capital region, similar scrutiny should also be extended to churches, temples, gurudwaras, and other religious establishments that may be functioning without complete legal permissions or documentation.

Sultan claimed that information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act indicates that several religious institutions belonging to different communities may not possess the required approvals and documents. He specifically named Hanuman Mandir in D-Sector, Gurudwara in Naharlagun, Kali Mandir in E-Sector Naharlagun, Naamghar in Naharlagun, Shiv Mandir in H-Sector Itanagar, Itafort Temple, Ganga Lake Temple, and Jollang Shiv Mandir in Itanagar. According to him, these are among the larger religious structures allegedly operating without valid documentation. He further alleged that there are numerous smaller religious establishments facing similar issues, although he had not sought RTI information regarding all of them.

The committee called upon the district administration to conduct a comprehensive survey of all religious institutions within the Itanagar Capital Region and verify their legal status. It maintained that compliance with existing laws and regulations is the responsibility of every religious organization, irrespective of denomination, and that any violations should be addressed through a fair and transparent process.

Raising another concern, Sultan questioned the alleged selective application of the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (APUAPA). Referring to the arrest of ST Bachao Andolan Committee members, including Tana Tamar, Sol Dodum, and Millo Ambo, during a previous bandh call, he asked why members of the All Papum Pare Youth Organization (APIYO) had not faced similar action despite recent controversies. He argued that laws such as the APUAPA should be enforced uniformly and without bias.

AAPMWC further appealed to the state government and district authorities to uphold the principles of equality, fairness, and transparency while dealing with issues related to the registration and documentation of religious institutions. The committee reiterated that enforcement measures should be guided solely by the rule of law and not by religious identity or community affiliation.

The statement comes amid ongoing discussions over the legal status and regulatory compliance of certain religious establishments in the Itanagar Capital Region, as authorities continue to examine documentation and registration-related matters concerning religious institutions across the region.

Deopani Clean-Up Drive Removes 50 Bags of Waste

Roing, June 6:

In a collective effort to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness, a mass social service drive was conducted on Saturday at the Deopani Bridge area in Roing. The initiative was led by the Superintendent of Police (SP), Roing, along with the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), President and General Secretary of AIMSU, Managing Director of Green Roing, police officers, Coordinator Nani Maria, students, interns, and several local well-wishers.

The cleanliness campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from police personnel, AIMSU members, Nani Maria students, and volunteers who joined hands to clean the popular riverside location. During the drive, participants collected and removed more than 50 large plastic bags filled with garbage and waste materials that had accumulated in the area.

Addressing the public, the organizers emphasized the importance of responsible waste disposal and urged visitors to maintain the natural beauty of the area. Citizens were requested to carry back the waste generated during picnics and outings instead of leaving plastic bags, food wrappers, bottles, and other litter behind. They noted that preserving nature requires only a small effort from each individual.

The organizers further appealed to residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of waste, stating that littering not only harms the environment but also creates an unpleasant appearance in public spaces. Maintaining clean surroundings, streets, educational campuses, and residential colonies is a shared responsibility that contributes to a healthier and more hygienic community.

Meanwhile, the Lower Dibang Valley Police informed that a Police Beat Post will soon be established near the Deopani Bridge area. The proposed facility aims to enhance public safety, monitor and regulate rash driving, and strengthen the sense of security for residents and visitors frequenting the location.

The organizers expressed hope that the spirit of cleanliness and civic responsibility would continue to grow among the public, helping transform Roing into a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful town for future generations.

Viral Video Questions Black Rice Authenticity

Itanagar, June 6:

A resident of Arunachal Pradesh has sparked concern on social media after sharing a video showing black rice she allegedly purchased from Dibrugarh, Assam, losing almost all of its colour during washing. According to the woman, she bought three small bags of black rice for ₹100 each. However, when she rinsed the rice before cooking, large amounts of dark colour reportedly washed away, leaving the grains nearly white. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention and concern from viewers across the region.

The video has raised serious questions about the authenticity of the rice and the possibility of adulteration in local food markets. Many social media users expressed shock at how rapidly the grains lost their colour, with some alleging that the rice may have been artificially dyed and sold as premium black rice. Black rice is generally more expensive than ordinary rice due to its nutritional value and antioxidant content, making it a potential target for fraudulent practices aimed at deceiving consumers.

It is important to note that genuine black rice naturally contains anthocyanins, antioxidant pigments that can cause water to turn purple or dark when the rice is washed or soaked. However, authentic black rice generally retains its dark colour even after repeated washing. In the viral video, the grains appeared to lose most of their black coating and turned significantly lighter, prompting many viewers to question whether the product was genuine or artificially coloured.

The incident comes just days after authorities in Assam seized and disposed of large quantities of bananas and mangoes that were allegedly found to have been treated with artificial ripening agents. Such chemicals, when misused, can pose potential health risks to consumers. These back-to-back incidents have intensified concerns over food safety, quality control, and the monitoring of products being sold in markets across the state.

While the authenticity of the rice shown in the viral video has not yet been independently verified, the episode serves as a reminder for consumers to exercise caution and carefully inspect products before making a purchase.

Food safety experts and consumer rights advocates stress the importance of buying from trusted sources and urge authorities to strengthen inspections and enforcement measures to prevent adulterated or unsafe food products from reaching the public.

APIYO Announces June 5 Bandh, Warns of Direct Action

The Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO) has announced a fresh 24-hour bandh beginning at 5 a.m. on June 5 and ending at 5 a.m. on June 6, alleging continued government inaction on its long-pending demands concerning alleged illegal mosques and illegal immigrants in the state.

The announcement comes just days after APIYO's 24-hour bandh observed on May 28, 2026. According to the organisation, the decision to intensify its agitation was taken due to what it described as the government's persistent ignorance of issues repeatedly raised by the indigenous youth body.

Addressing the media, APIYO president Taro Sonam Liyak stated that despite several memorandums, meetings, protests and the recent bandh, the state government has failed to take any concrete action on the organisation's key demands. He alleged that assurances given by the government have not translated into action on the ground.

Liyak reiterated APIYO's demands, which include action against alleged illegal immigrants and the demolition of alleged illegal religious structures that the organisation claims were constructed without proper authorization.

He said the June 5 bandh is intended to send a strong message to the government regarding public dissatisfaction over the delay in addressing the issues raised by the organisation. APIYO further warned that the movement could be intensified across the state if the government continues to remain unresponsive.

The APIYO president stated that while the organisation's previous agitations were peaceful in nature, the June 5 bandh would mark a more aggressive phase of the movement. He announced that APIYO members would proceed to dismantle alleged illegal structures within the Capital Region if the authorities fail to take action. He also warned other organisations against opposing or obstructing the proposed agitation.

The organisation appealed to the public to extend cooperation during the bandh and maintained that its agitation would continue until its demands are addressed.

APIYO leaders indicated that further programmes and the future course of the movement would be announced in the coming days depending on the government's response.

IMC Begins Eviction Drive Along NH-415 in Nirjuli

Itanagar, June 3:

The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Wednesday commenced an eviction drive against roadside vendors and unauthorized structures along National Highway-415 in Nirjuli, following the expiration of a 10-day deadline issued last month for the removal of encroachments.

Teams from the municipal body carried out the operation in areas where vendors had continued to occupy roadside spaces despite repeated directives. The drive focused on clearing illegal meat, fruit, and vegetable stalls as well as temporary structures erected along the highway, which authorities said were obstructing public spaces and contributing to increasing traffic congestion on one of the Capital Region’s busiest road corridors.

The action follows an order issued by IMC on May 25, directing all roadside meat, vegetable, and fruit vendors operating along NH-415 within the city limits to immediately cease business activities and dismantle their structures within ten days. The notice was issued by Joint Commissioner Khoda Lasa (APCS), who stated that the vendors were operating in a haphazard manner along the highway, creating serious concerns related to traffic management, sanitation, and public safety.

According to the municipal corporation, the open sale of meat and other perishable products in unhygienic roadside conditions poses potential health risks to the public. Authorities noted that such practices could increase the likelihood of zoonotic diseases, including Anthrax, Leptospirosis, Cysticercosis, Brucellosis, and Rabies. The corporation also observed that the concentration of vendors along the highway had led to frequent traffic bottlenecks, posing inconvenience to commuters and increasing the risk of road accidents.

IMC stated that the roadside vending activities violate provisions of the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 2019, the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Act, 2007, and the Executive Order issued by the District Magistrate of the Capital Region on September 24, 2024. The corporation maintained that the eviction drive is part of a broader effort to ensure orderly urban development, improve public hygiene, and maintain smooth vehicular movement along NH-415.

Municipal officials appealed to vendors and shop owners to cooperate with the administration, emphasizing that the exercise is being undertaken in the larger public interest. They reiterated that strict action would continue against those who fail to comply with the regulations and warned that the cost of demolition and removal of debris would be recovered from the concerned vendors and structure owners.

The eviction drive is expected to continue in phases across other stretches of the highway as IMC intensifies its efforts to remove encroachments and restore public spaces within the Capital Region.
