Itanagar, April 13:
Arunachal Pradesh athletes were accorded a warm reception and felicitated by the state government following their commendable performance at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, marking a proud moment for the state’s sporting community.
The flag-in and felicitation ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with Member of Parliament Tapir Gao, Secretary Sports & Youth Affairs Abu Tayeng, and other dignitaries. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister praised the athletes for their dedication, discipline, and resilience, stating that their achievements reflect the immense potential of the state’s youth. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to providing better infrastructure, training facilities, and opportunities to nurture sporting talent across Arunachal Pradesh.
The state contingent delivered an outstanding performance, securing a total of 11 medals, including 6 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze. With this achievement, Arunachal Pradesh finished 5th among 30 States and Union Territories and emerged as the best-performing state from the Northeast region.
A total of 77 athletes represented the state in disciplines such as athletics, archery, football, weightlifting, and wrestling. The athletes showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition. Notably, Ruba Tadu and Lalu Taku clinched gold medals in weightlifting, playing a crucial role in boosting the state’s medal tally. Several other athletes also delivered commendable performances, contributing to the overall success of the contingent.
The inaugural edition of the Games was held in Chhattisgarh from March 25 to April 3, 2026, across venues in Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Surguja. The event witnessed participation from over 3,800 athletes from across the country and featured seven competitive sports along with two demonstration events highlighting indigenous and traditional tribal sports.
The felicitation ceremony not only celebrated the medal winners but also recognized the efforts of coaches, support staff, and officials who played a vital role in preparing the athletes for the prestigious event. The success of Arunachal Pradesh at the Games stands as a testament to the growing sports culture in the state and signals a promising future for its athletes on national and international platforms.
