Centenarian Wakham Tangjang Passes Away at 101 in Borduria

 

Borduria, April 13:

Borduria village in Tirap district is mourning the loss of Wakham Tangjang, its oldest male resident, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 101 following a stroke.

Widely regarded as a living archive of Nocte heritage, Tangjang was known for preserving and sharing the oral traditions, history, and cultural identity of Borduria and its surrounding Chhana villages. His storytelling and oratory skills made him a revered figure across generations.

He is survived by his wife Ponglee Tangjang; sons Ngaasah Tangjang, Tenyok Tangjang, Teba Tangjang, the late Tekhong Tangjang, Wanglo Tangjang, and Tesah Tangjang; and daughter Lomnya Tangjang Songtheng.

Condolences poured in from several public representatives, including Wangki Lowang, Wanglin Lowangdong, and Chakat Aboh. They described his passing as “the end of an era,” noting that the community has lost not just its eldest member but also a guardian of its traditions and cultural memory.

Villagers remembered him as a wise elder and guiding force who inspired efforts to preserve indigenous identity. People from across Tirap district and beyond gathered to pay their respects, offering prayers and floral tributes.

The final rites were conducted on April 13 at Borduria village in accordance with Nocte customs and traditions.
