IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms in Arunachal Districts from June 21

Itanagar, June 20:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre Itanagar, has issued an impact-based weather forecast warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh over the next two days. The warning, issued at 1:00 PM on June 20, cautions that isolated places may experience heavy rainfall ranging between 6 cm and 11 cm within a 24-hour period.

According to the forecast, Papum Pare, Upper Siang, and Lower Dibang Valley districts are likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall during the period from June 21 to June 22. The weather activity is expected to continue on June 22–23, with Namsai, Lower Dibang Valley, and Lohit districts likely to experience similar conditions. Lower Dibang Valley remains under warning for both forecast periods, indicating the possibility of prolonged rainfall activity in the district.

The IMD has advised residents to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall may trigger localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, landslides in vulnerable hilly regions, and temporary disruption of road connectivity.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning could also pose risks to outdoor activities, agricultural operations, and power infrastructure. People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees during thunderstorms and to follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.

With the southwest monsoon remaining active across Northeast India, weather experts have indicated that spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely to continue in the region over the coming days. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and district administration alerts.

The IMD's latest advisory underscores the need for preparedness, particularly in districts prone to landslides, flash floods, and weather-related disruptions, as the monsoon season gains momentum across Arunachal Pradesh.
