Khangri Glacier Expedition Warns of Rising GLOF Threat in Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang, May 10:

The 5th Khangri Glacier Scientific Expedition (2026) has been successfully completed in the remote Mago Chu Basin of Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh, marking another significant milestone in long-term glacier monitoring efforts in the Eastern Himalayas.

The scientific mission commenced on May 4, 2026, focusing on the climate-sensitive Khangri Glacier, one of the least-explored glacier systems in the region. The expedition revealed several alarming signs of rapid environmental and geomorphological transformation linked to climate change and rising temperatures.

Major Findings from the Expedition

During the field study, researchers observed that the glacier snout is rapidly collapsing, leading to the formation of unstable terrain and increasing geomorphological vulnerability in the region.

One of the most concerning discoveries was the formation of a proglacial lake at an altitude of nearly 16,500 feet. Scientists warned that the newly formed lake could pose a serious Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) threat to downstream areas of the Mago Chu Basin if instability increases in the future.

The expedition team also recorded critically high glacier melt rates despite comparatively healthy winter snowfall this year. Experts stated that ongoing climate variability and rising temperatures continue to accelerate glacier retreat across the Eastern Himalayas.

Scientific Activities Conducted

To strengthen long-term cryosphere monitoring and glacier research, the team successfully installed five new scientific monitoring stakes at elevations reaching up to 17,000 feet.

The expedition further carried out detailed snow density and glacier mass balance measurements to assess annual accumulation and melting patterns. Researchers also collected data from Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to analyse extreme weather conditions and retrieved hydrological data from Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLR) for water-flow and flood-related assessments.

Additionally, moraine and water samples were collected from the glacier snout for advanced scientific analysis.

Joint Scientific Initiative

The expedition was jointly conducted by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies.

Since 2022, both institutions have been carrying out systematic field-based glacier monitoring in the Eastern Himalayas to generate critical scientific data on glacier sensitivity to global warming and climate change impacts.

Speaking on the expedition, Er. Nyelam Sunil, Head of the Cryosphere Division at the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), stated that the 5th Khangri Glacier Scientific Expedition was among the toughest expeditions undertaken since the programme began in 2022 due to challenging terrain, weather conditions, and the remote high-altitude environment.

Scientists emphasized that the Eastern Himalayan cryosphere remains one of India’s most vulnerable mountain ecosystems. Through continuous monitoring, collaborative research, and scientific assessment, the expedition aims to contribute toward the protection of fragile Himalayan ecosystems and downstream communities dependent on glacier-fed water resources.

Itanagar, May 20:

The All Papum Poma Students’ Union (APPSU) has announced a one-day peaceful protest against the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya admission fee hike, which will be held on 12 May 2026 at the VKV Balijan campus from 10:00 AM onwards.

The protest is being organised against the Arunachal Pradesh VKV Trust over what the union termed as an “abrupt” increase in the school’s admission fee structure. APPSU stated that the agitation is being carried out in support of students and parents affected by the sudden fee hike.

According to the union, a memorandum was submitted to the Secretary of the Arunachal VKV Trust on 4 May 2026, placing several demands before the authorities. These included immediate reduction of the fee structure, introduction of an installment-based payment system to ease the burden on parents, reservation for local students, and implementation of a uniform fee structure across all VKVs in the state.

APPSU stated that despite giving the authorities a four-day ultimatum to respond to the demands, no official reply or assurance has been received so far. The union alleged that the continued silence of the VKV authorities has compelled them to launch the democratic protest.

The protest banner released by APPSU carries slogans such as “Education is Our Right,” “Stop Fee Hike,” “Justice for Students,” and “Fair Fees, Equal Future,” highlighting the concerns of students and parents over affordability of education.

The union further appealed to students, parents, and members of the public to extend support to the movement, stating that the protest aims to ensure accessible and affordable education for all sections of society.

Itanagar, May 9:

The All Arunachal Pradesh Private Schools & Children Welfare Association (AAPPS&CWA) has issued an extensive set of guidelines for private schools and hostels across Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on student safety, discipline, cultural preservation, welfare measures, and institutional administration.

In a move aimed at promoting indigenous heritage and cultural identity among students, the Association announced that every Friday will be observed as “Traditional Dress Day.” On the designated day, students, teachers, and staff members will be required to wear traditional attire representing their respective tribes or districts.

The Association has also laid down strict transportation safety regulations for schools. Additionally, all school buses must adhere to a maximum speed limit of 40 km per hour, while the deployment of a handyman or helper during student transport has been made mandatory to ensure student safety and assistance.

To strengthen emergency preparedness, schools and buses have been instructed to prominently display essential emergency contact numbers, including those of ambulance services, fire departments, and nearby police stations.

For hostel administration, the guidelines mandate the appointment of one Warden and at least two Assistant Wardens on every hostel floor to ensure adequate supervision and student welfare. The Association has further directed schools to install CCTV surveillance systems in school campuses and hostel premises, excluding girls’ hostel areas and other privacy-sensitive locations.

Special emphasis has also been placed on food safety and hygiene in hostels. Hostel authorities have been instructed to maintain strict cleanliness standards in kitchens and dining areas. Hostel staff members will also be required to taste and verify food quality before meals are served to students.

In a welfare-oriented initiative, the Association directed every private school in the state to provide free admission to at least two orphan students. The selection process will be carried out based on certification and approval by the concerned District Administration and the Association, with the respective Deputy Commissioner chairing the selection committee.

The guidelines further make Association membership compulsory for all private schools for a minimum period of three years beginning January 2026. APIYO Alleges Govt Inaction on Illegal Immigrants, Warns of Fresh Protest

Itanagar, May 8:

The Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO), led by president Taro Sonam Liyak and vice president Chera Taji, on Friday alleged that the state government has failed to take concrete action despite repeated memorandums submitted to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu regarding the demolition of alleged illegal mosques and action against illegal immigrants in the state.

Addressing the media, Taro Sonam Liyak said the organisation had earlier planned to launch a “Delhi Chalo Abhiyan” on January 30. However, the agitation was deferred after APIYO reportedly received written assurance from the Chief Minister’s Office following a meeting with Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Home Minister Mama Natung on January 27.

According to Liyak, although the government assured the organisation that necessary steps would be taken, no visible action has been initiated on the ground till date.

However, Liyak alleged that the government’s decision to close only the weekly markets created a misunderstanding between the APIYO team and local women vendors. Clarifying the organisation’s position, he said APIYO’s demands were centred on three key issues, demolition of alleged illegal mosques, identification and removal of illegal immigrants, and closure of weekly markets which, according to the organisation, allegedly facilitate the entry of non-locals into Arunachal Pradesh without proper verification.

Liyak acknowledged that some action had been taken regarding weekly markets, but claimed that no measures were initiated against alleged illegal structures or illegal immigrants.

The APIYO president also stated that the organisation had repeatedly attempted to seek appointments with the Chief Minister to discuss the matter further, but alleged that no meeting had been granted so far.

Announcing the organisation’s next course of action, Liyak said APIYO would continue its democratic movement and intensify its protest in the coming days. He stated that future agitations would no longer be confined to the tennis court area in Itanagar, but would instead be staged outside the alleged illegal mosques.

During the press interaction, Liyak also referred to the recent order of the Supreme Court of India directing a preliminary inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into allegations of corruption and nepotism against Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

Citing the example of Nepal’s former Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who allegedly resigned following corruption allegations to ensure a fair investigation, Liyak said Chief Minister Pema Khandu should similarly step down to allow an impartial probe.

He concluded by stating that APIYO’s further course of action would be announced after consultations with district-based members of the organisation.

SC Restores Bail to IAS Officer Talo Potom in Gomchu Yekar Case

New Delhi/ Itanagar May 7:

The Supreme Court on Thursday restored the bail granted to Arunachal Pradesh IAS officer Talo Potom in connection with the alleged abetment of suicide case involving 19-year-old Gomchu Yekar.

A Bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar set aside the earlier order of the Gauhati High Court, which had cancelled Potom’s bail and directed him to surrender.

After hearing arguments from the counsel representing the complainant, the apex court observed that there were no sufficient grounds to interfere with the bail granted earlier by the trial court. The Bench ordered that the bail granted by the Sessions Court would continue to remain in force.

However, the Supreme Court directed that Potom must not threaten, influence, or intimidate the complainant or any witnesses during the course of the trial. The court further stated that any such violation could result in cancellation of bail.

The Bench also clarified that it was refraining from making any observations regarding the contents of the alleged dying declaration and suicide notes, noting that such remarks could prejudice the merits of the ongoing trial.

The case pertains to the death of 19-year-old Gomchu Yekar, who was found dead at his rented accommodation in Lekhi village on October 23, 2025. According to reports, Yekar allegedly left behind suicide notes accusing the accused persons of mental harassment, sexual exploitation, involvement in corruption-related activities, and knowingly exposing him to HIV/AIDS.

Talo Potom was arrested on October 27, 2025, following the registration of the case. Within a week, the Sessions Court granted him bail. The bail order was later challenged by the deceased’s father before the Gauhati High Court.

The High Court subsequently cancelled the bail, observing that the trial court had granted relief without proper application of mind and had allegedly overlooked material evidence, including references made to Potom in the suicide note.

The High Court had also taken note of the prosecution’s concerns regarding the alleged deletion of WhatsApp chats and voice messages, which were later sent for forensic examination. It further observed that releasing an “influential person” at an early stage of investigation could potentially derail the probe.

Challenging the High Court’s order, Potom approached the Supreme Court seeking restoration of bail. While allowing his appeal, the apex court clarified that its observations were confined only to the question of custody and would not influence the trial proceedings or the merits of the case.
