The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Gauhati High Court’s order that had cancelled the bail of former Itanagar Capital Complex Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom in an alleged abetment-to-suicide case.
The High Court’s Itanagar Permanent Bench, through its judgment dated January 22, 2026 (CRLP No. 253/2025), had cancelled the bail granted to Potom in November 2025. Following the cancellation, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had stated that the accused officer was absconding and that search operations had been intensified to trace him.
Hearing a Special Leave Petition filed by Potom, a Bench of the Supreme Court of India stayed the operation of the High Court order until further hearing. With this stay, the cancellation of bail has been temporarily put on hold, and the earlier bail granted to the accused will continue for the time being.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the State of Arunachal Pradesh and the complainant, granting them four weeks to file their replies. The matter will be listed for further hearing after six weeks. The Court also directed the accused to cooperate with the ongoing investigation and allowed him to file an additional affidavit raising further grounds.

Earlier, the SIT had informed that Potom could not be traced after the Gauhati High Court cancelled his bail. SIT Superintendent of Police S Bhushan had said that search operations were expanded across multiple locations and that the investigation was actively underway.
Potom was arrested on October 27, 2025, in connection with the death of Gomchu Yekar, who died by suicide on October 23, 2025, at Lekhi village. He was granted bail on November 4, 2025, after spending 14 days in judicial custody. The case has been registered at Nirjuli Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to abetment of suicide.
The Supreme Court has not passed any final judgment in the case. The proceedings remain pending, and further orders will be passed after hearing all parties.
