Pema Khandu Launches Statewide HPV Vaccination Drive

Itanagar, February 28, 2026:

Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Saturday formally launched the statewide National HPV Vaccination Campaign at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), marking a significant step toward strengthening preventive healthcare in Arunachal Pradesh. Health Minister Biyuram Wahge and senior health officials were also present on the occasion.

The initiative aims to protect adolescent girls, particularly those aged 14 years, against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer. Following the formal launch, vaccination of eligible beneficiaries commenced immediately, with the Chief Minister symbolically handing over HPV vaccination certificates to the first recipients.

Strengthening Preventive Healthcare

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of young girls across the state. He emphasized that preventive healthcare remains a key priority of the government and described the vaccination campaign as a crucial intervention to reduce the long-term burden of cervical cancer in Arunachal Pradesh.

Health Minister Biyuram Wahge highlighted the importance of awareness and community participation in ensuring the success of the programme. He noted that immunization plays a vital role in preventing life-threatening diseases and urged parents and guardians to encourage eligible children to avail the vaccine.

Importance of HPV Vaccination

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection and one of the primary causes of cervical cancer among women. According to health experts, timely vaccination significantly reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. The HPV vaccine is widely recognized as a safe and effective preventive measure and has been introduced in several states as part of national immunization efforts.

Officials stated that widespread immunization under this campaign is expected to substantially reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in the coming years. By targeting adolescent girls before exposure to the virus, the programme aims to ensure long-term health protection and improved quality of life.

Coordinated Efforts Across the State

The campaign forms part of the nationwide rollout of the National HPV Vaccination Programme across India. Arunachal Pradesh is implementing the initiative in coordination with the central government, with health departments mobilizing medical teams and awareness drives across districts.

Authorities informed that vaccination centres will be operational in government health institutions and selected schools to ensure maximum outreach. The state health department has also planned awareness campaigns to educate communities about the benefits and safety of the vaccine.

A Step Toward a Healthier Future

The launch of the HPV vaccination campaign represents a significant milestone in Arunachal Pradesh’s public health strategy. By prioritizing preventive healthcare measures, the government aims to reduce avoidable illnesses and strengthen long-term health outcomes for women in the state.

With the programme now underway, officials expressed confidence that the campaign will contribute to lowering cervical cancer cases and building a healthier future for the next generation.
