Nafra, February 26, 2026:
A district-level earthquake response mock exercise was successfully conducted on February 26 at the DC Office in Nafra, Bichom district, aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and enhancing coordinated emergency response mechanisms across departments.
The exercise was organized by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Bichom district, in collaboration with the 12th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The primary objective of the drill was to assess preparedness levels, improve inter-agency coordination, and test the effectiveness of emergency response protocols in the event of a major earthquake.
Focus on Preparedness and Rapid Response
The mock drill simulated a realistic earthquake scenario, requiring immediate activation of emergency response systems. Participating agencies demonstrated search and rescue operations, evacuation procedures, and on-site emergency medical management. Rescue teams carried out controlled evacuation of individuals from simulated damaged structures, while medical teams provided first aid and triage support.
Officials stated that such exercises are essential in a region like Arunachal Pradesh, which falls under a high seismic zone and is prone to earthquakes. By conducting periodic drills, authorities aim to minimize potential loss of life and property during actual disasters.
Inter-Departmental Coordination
Various line departments, including police, fire and emergency services, health officials, and administrative staff, actively participated in the exercise. The drill emphasized seamless communication, quick mobilization of resources, and clearly defined roles and responsibilities during emergencies.
The 12th Battalion of the NDRF delivered a practical and realistic demonstration of specialized rescue techniques, including safe extraction of trapped victims and use of protective equipment. Their participation significantly enriched the training and enhanced participants’ practical understanding of disaster response operations.

Participants were briefed on safety measures, emergency contact systems, and coordination procedures to be followed during earthquakes.
The district administration reiterated its commitment to improving resilience and ensuring public safety through regular training programmes and awareness initiatives. Authorities noted that preparedness, timely response, and community cooperation are key factors in effectively managing natural disasters.
Strengthening Disaster Management Systems
The successful conduct of the exercise reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to reinforce disaster preparedness mechanisms. By identifying potential gaps and testing real-time coordination, the mock drill provided valuable insights for further strengthening emergency response strategies.
Officials expressed confidence that such initiatives would enhance readiness and improve the district’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to future emergencies.
