Pasighat, January 18:
In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on narcotics, the East Siang Police apprehended two notorious drug peddlers and seized suspected heroin worth approximately ₹2 lakh during a late-night operation in Pasighat in the early hours of January 16.
Acting on specific and credible intelligence, the Anti-Drug Squad (ADS), East Siang, set up a NAKA at the 2 Mile Police Check Post around 3:00 am. At approximately 3:40 am, a Hyundai i10 vehicle approached the checkpoint at high speed. Despite repeated signals to stop, the driver attempted to evade the police and flee.
Considering the gravity of the intelligence input, the imminent risk to on-duty personnel, and the possibility of the suspects escaping, the police fired a single round from a government-issued 9mm pistol to intercept the vehicle. The vehicle was subsequently stopped and secured without any injury.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of:
Two soap cases containing 21.33 grams of suspected heroin (estimated market value ₹2 lakh)
Three mobile phones (two smartphones and one keypad phone)
Three used syringes
Cash amounting to ₹1,680
One Hyundai i10 vehicle, which was seized
The arrested accused have been identified as Deepak Panyang alias Tanung Panyang, a resident of Gumin Nagar, Pasighat, and Tani Panyang, a resident of Ngorlung Village under Ruksin, both allegedly involved in illicit narcotics trafficking.
The operation was led by DSP Ayup Boko, In-charge of ADS, and executed by a team comprising Inspector Dojum Bagra, SI Kuncha Tangha, SI (SG) Md. Khan, Constable K. Mili, and Constable A. Miyu.
All seizures were carried out strictly in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, in the presence of a Gazetted Officer and independent witnesses. The accused, along with the seized items, were produced at Pasighat Police Station and handed over to the Officer-in-Charge.
Subsequently, a case vide PSGT/PS/C/No. 05/26 has been registered under Section 3(5) of the BNS read with Sections 21(b) and 25 of the NDPS Act. Both accused have been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
Commending the swift and courageous action of the ADS team, Pankaj Lamba, Superintendent of Police, East Siang, reiterated the district police’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offences. He urged the public to actively cooperate by sharing information on narcotics activities, stressing that community participation is vital to making East Siang drug-free.
