Tawang Imposes Ban on Small Plastic Water Bottles

Tawang, June 18:

In a major step towards environmental protection and reducing plastic waste, the Tawang District Administration has announced a complete prohibition on the use, storage, sale, distribution, and supply of single-use plastic drinking water bottles with a capacity of less than two litres across the district. The ban will come into effect from July 1, 2026.

The public notice, issued by the Office of the Executive Engineer, Urban Development Department, Tawang Division, and endorsed by Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo (IAS), aims to promote sustainable consumption practices and curb the growing problem of plastic pollution.

According to the order, the restriction will apply to all government offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, event organizers, hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors, and the general public within Tawang district.

To ensure a smooth transition, the administration has directed event organizers, government departments, educational institutions, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments to arrange alternative drinking water facilities. These may include water dispensers, refill stations, water filters, and larger-capacity water containers instead of small disposable plastic bottles.

The administration has also warned that surprise inspections will be conducted by officials from the District Administration and concerned departments to monitor compliance with the order.

Authorities stated that any violation of the notification will attract action under the relevant provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Bye-laws, 2023, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Penalties may include seizure of prohibited items and the imposition of fines as prescribed by law.

The district administration has appealed to all stakeholders, including businesses, institutions, market associations, transport unions, hotels, homestays, and residents, to extend full cooperation in the successful implementation of the initiative.

The move is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste generation in the district and strengthen Tawang's efforts towards becoming a cleaner and more environmentally sustainable destination. Tawang is one of Arunachal Pradesh's most prominent tourist districts, making waste management and environmental conservation critical priorities for the region.
