ASTBAC Demands Action Over Alleged ILP Violation at Medo Check Gate

Tezu, June 8:

The Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan Committee (ASTBAC), Lohit District Unit, has submitted a formal representation to the Superintendent of Police, Lohit district, strongly condemning an incident that allegedly took place at Medo Check Gate on June 5 involving members of the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU), Lekang Circle.

In the memorandum, the committee stated that Lohit district falls under the protected area regime where possession of a valid Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for all non-APST individuals entering the district. The committee alleged that certain AMSU members attempted to enter Lohit district without valid ILP documents and reportedly misbehaved with police personnel on duty at the check gate.

The organization claimed that such actions amount to a violation of ILP regulations and could create unnecessary law-and-order concerns. It further asserted that harassment of police personnel and the use of provocative statements at a notified check gate cannot be tolerated.

Seeking intervention from the district police, ASTBAC urged authorities to initiate appropriate legal action against those involved in the incident, strengthen ILP verification at Medo Check Gate, and ensure that similar incidents are not repeated in the future.

The committee also called for strict enforcement of ILP provisions, stating that effective implementation of the permit system is necessary to maintain peace and safeguard the rights and interests of indigenous communities in the district.

The memorandum was signed by ASTBAC Lohit District Unit chairman Okaylum Mam and general secretary Katukso Kri and was officially received by the office of the Superintendent of Police, Lohit district, on June 8.

The representation comes amid heightened debate over ILP enforcement and the movement of people across border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Reports indicate that tensions had recently emerged at Medo Check Gate over ILP-related issues involving members of the Moran communi
