Tawang, May 23:
As part of the ongoing campaign against narcotic substances and to promote a drug-free society, Tawang Police carried out multiple cannabis destruction drives in different parts of the district with the support of security forces and local villagers.
A major joint Cannabis Destruction Drive was conducted in collaboration with the 67th Battalion SSB Lungla and villagers of Kharteng and Namtsering in the Namtsering–Kharteng area under the leadership of Shri Ajati Mimi, Officer-in-Charge of Police Station Lungla. During the operation, police and security personnel, along with local residents, cleared an area measuring approximately 2.3 acres where wild cannabis was found growing extensively.
Officials informed that nearly 1500 kilograms of wild cannabis were destroyed during the drive and disposed of by burning on the spot as per prescribed procedure. The operation was aimed at preventing the illegal cultivation and misuse of cannabis in remote areas of the district.
In another similar operation conducted earlier on 15 May 2026, the Jang Police Station team led by Sub-Inspector Bapok Lego, Officer-in-Charge of PS Jang, along with the Tawang Reserve Team, carried out a destruction drive in the Chakzam area under Jang subdivision.
During the drive, wild cannabis plants weighing approximately 0.6 quintals were found growing in scattered patches over an area of nearly 200 square metres. The plants were uprooted and destroyed on the spot following due procedure.
Tawang Police stated that such operations will continue in vulnerable and remote locations across the district as part of the intensified anti-drug campaign. The department also appreciated the cooperation extended by local villagers and security forces in the successful execution of the drives.
The continuous efforts are being undertaken under the broader mission of creating awareness against substance abuse and ensuring a safer, drug-free environment for the younger generation and society at large.
